400$ scope on a 300$ rifle - Page 2

I think a 200$ scope is more that adequate just keep it on a rifle that doesn't recoil more than a 30-06. Most of the cheaper scopes are ment to last around 1000-1500 rnds from a 30-06. The Bushnell Legend is advertise to witstand 1000 rnds from a 375 it cost about 150 bones. Cheap scopes are built with cheaper parts like lenses and lense coatings. I wouldn't buy a scope that advertised fully coated lenses only multi coated.

You can always remove an expensive scope from a cheap rifle when you sell it . . . . to get that custom job.

I dont know I have a 900 dollar Swarovski on a 600 dollar rugar. I think a lot of my scopes cost nearly as much or more then the gun they are on. a real, quality scope is a presision made tool and cost a lot of money. good optics arent cheap. I think, to me at least, paying a lot/more for the glass is alright, you get what you pay for. that said I have bought lots of used guns at cheap price and torn off the tasco or bushnell scopes, I have even bought a couple scopes that were only slightly used and been happy with them. I guess it is all how you look at it I consider a package deal when I am looking at buying a hunting rifle I would consider the optics part of the overall package so I wouldnt have a 300 dollar gun I would have the whole platform for 700 dollars. and if the gun was well built and fired nicely I would want to take advantage of that with a nice scope. you may say that you can do just as good with a bushnell or something at a quarter of the price but once you use a really fine glass you will know the difference and if it is in your ability I think its fine to buy

Yes, it absolutely does make sense. Quite often manufacurers
either buy barrels from other high quality manufacturers or make all their own barrels with the same machinery and same attention to quality control.

The point being the "quality" perceived by the purchaser is often more a matter of advertising plus a more expensive wood in the stock and/or perhaps a higher level of polishing and bluing.

Putting a very good scope on a rifle of lesser over the counter price is often a big surprise to the shooter. Putting a scope of lower quality on a rifle of lesser price often just mentally verifies to the shooter the rifle lacks performance potential.

I was at the gun shop the other day and a gentleman came in with his rifle wanting to put a scope on it (i was looking at pistols so i wasnt too close). After he left, all the older folk were laughing at him because apparently he wanted to put a $75 scope on a $900 rifle.

Well, sounds like he spent all his money on the rifle. I think I would of spent at least a 100.00 bucks on a 900.00 rifle.

Yes! Lots of guns can be made to shoot...poor optics can't be overcome. I alway laugh at guys that spend boocoodles on a gun and top it with $hitty glass.

I have two Bushnell Elite scopes that have never let me down and I didn't pay more than $150 for either. I don't shoot every day so they will suit me just fine. I shoot one ragged hole with my .300 Winmag Custom at 100 yds.
