Purdy, welcome to the forum. WE will educate you! Not to worry! By the way, as Mooseman already said, and others know, grizzlies are alive and doing just fine.

Who cares if they're endangered or not, that was not the question. I believe we were discussing what the smallest round one would use on one. Something we can just have a little fun kicking around. They are just opinions not acts of crime.

Minimum for grizz. uhhhh .30-06 I guess. Never hunted them but that is about the least I would trust my life to for dangerous game .308 in a real pinch.

If you could lug 30+ lbs. of gun and make a good shot I could see no better cartridge. I read an article about a couple who actually did use it and they killed deer and elk at 1,000 yds.

Aparently I mis-spoke (mis-wrote) they are not endangered, merely "threatened". ( In the lower 48 and much of Canada eh?) None-the-less, they are not hunted in the lower 48. And I believe that most of the Grizzlys in Alaska are actually classified as Brown bear as they are found on the coastal areas (similar in Russia?). Not looking for an argument though, as I am sure you know your area. I know mine, we have Grizzlys, they are trouble, we can't defend our property and face prosecution if we think we are defending our lives. Those who shoot one by mistake loose their gun, their hunting privledges and are heavily fined.

Thank you Bob for the welcome, not many do that here. As to the education, LOL, hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I have been shooting and hunting for over 50 years and have been getting quite a chuckle over some of the topics and responses. (everyone has an opinion valid or not)

We have Grizzlys where I live but no hunting season, the only ones killed are by cars, trains and the ocasional mis identification by black bear hunters.

Hey purdy, sorry for not saying "welcome". Try not to get the wrong impression from just one thread. Many of the guys here are knowledgeable and very willing to help. However opinions are more of the "bare knuckle" of the conversation so sit back, speak your mind and have fun with the reactions...... I do

Getting closer there Purdy. Regionaly , yes they are threatened in Montana. No where close to threatened here in alaska or russia or canada. They are activly hunted in those places. I understand your point though. No worries.

As far as coastal ( commonly refered to as "brown bears "or interior, commonly referd to as "grizzly" ) The far greater numbers are interior. The coastal get all the press due to there massive size and more concentrated and localized densities. A mature "brown bear" can easily exceed 1000lbs while the typical "grizzly" is 600lbs ish. Either very formidable demanding ones full attention !

I chose the '06, thats as small a round I would want to use on a grizz or brown bear but since I don't own an '06, i'll have to use my 45-70 or 375 H&H.
