Is the .338 Lapua Magnum worth useing for big game hunting ?

.338 lapua. no far too expensive, and there are calibers that are easier on the shoulder that will do the same for NA game animals.

It's a lot like using the .50 BMG for hunting, sure you can do it, but would it really be worth the expense? No

Plus, AI makes lots of great rifles in more accessible calibers, such as .308Win.

I guess it would depend alot on what I was hunting. If hunting in Afganastan, I think it would be wonderful

From what I have read it would be a shoulder pounding, ear splitting muzzle blaster that might bore a neat hole through most animals.

Some things are just overpowered. However, if you want a powerful military cartridge in a very heavy gun then this just might be your
best choice for something under .50 caliber.

I was reading an article in my latest SSAA magazine on this last night, this is just prices. for a rem 700 police special without a scope $2400 AUD, the prices for factory ammo is $10 AUD a round.

that's freaking expensive

The 338/378 is in the same ballpark(though more powerfull) I've only shot two Mulie Bucks with it but it worked very well indeed.

I agree with midas. Sure you could do it but why. Sniping elk with a 50 cal at 1000 yards. Whats the point? Sniping them with a slightly smaller round is still kinda cheep.

And a bow hunter thinks a gun hunter has it to easy, same with a flintlock hunter to a percussion rifle user. To each thier own. I don't think I could afford to us a gun that cost ten bucks a round to shoot. Though diesel is up to 4 something a gallon, so a ten dollar round is really not that bad? lol.

I just saw a 338 lapua Sako TRG at the local gun show. They wanted round $800 dollers for it which is a steal. However the gun had been slightly used and it still is a huge gun for hunting. The TRG is however what Sako based there tactical sniper weapons off of.
