Hey Phil, is it true that Cape Buffalo are smaller than Water Buffalo? I was always of the opinion that it was the other way around, but i have been told and read quite a few times that i was wrong and Water Buffalo were bigger. Do you do hunts for Kudu? In my opinion there is not a more beautiful looking animal anywhere in the world. One day i will make the trip over and get one (wont be any time soon, but i will get there one day) |

I don't remember the author, some big name from 30 years ago. Wrote a very convincing article claiming the Cape Buffalo was the most dangerous. He said they take being shot very personally and like to stomp on you and mash you up into bits even after you're dead.

I had a Vet. on safari that works with cattle. He administers medicine to them by weight, so is pretty good at estimating the weight of a cow/bull. He shot a Buff that he said was pushing 2,000 lbs. Admittedly, it was a pretty big Bull, but I would say he was pushing it a small bit. Maybe 1,800 lbs. or so. It was pretty big, I will say that, one of the biggest we have taken. Are Buff dangerous ? Bloody right they are. Can they take a pounding ? Have a look here (scroll down), then you tell me - http://www.gunandgame.com/forums/big...life-pics.html (post your wildlife pics) I have had more experiences with Buffalo than any of the others on the list, as in Tanzania on a long safari you can shoot three Buff, but only one each of the others (no Rhino). Additionally, I have had more Buffalo charges than the rest in the group. Had my share from the others, enough to form my opinion, and don't care to "get more anymore reference material". Buffalo are unbelievably tough, but he is a lot slower than the Lion and not as dangerous as the Elephant, IMO. What I would give to be able to come there and test out the list to see which was my most dangerous. I fear hunting here in eastern Pa has left me with no experiance to compare to hunting there. The most dangerous thing I have run into hunting, other hunters, one very well hiden coperhead, while on my hands and knees tracking deer, or maybe 55lb beaver I had to carry back up the cliff to the truck, all the time wondering, why did I every put a trap down there.

Pretty dangerous. However, this thread was suppose to be about hunting animals. You know, the animals that are considered the most dangerous in Africa, better know as the Big 5. Best, Phil ____________________________ Stay out of sight and down wind Professional Hunter ~ Tanzania

I don't know how I would have answered this ? before reading all posted... But in general all are noted as dangerous for a reason, and deserve respect. I have never hunted any but hope to someday. I can only go by what have read and heard from others in the past. I think each situation is different can change the situation from one being more dangerous than the other. I would agree however, elephant with their shear size and brain power make them formitable game. Then too, Cats are hunters also, by nature hunting a hunter is touchy business. And with Buff being tough as they are, I also have heard they are thinkers also, so anything that can become vengeful, provocated or not is scary. Rhino's just plain look menacing, and seem to have that disposition besides. Don't know why Hippo isn't on the list making it 6. with as many people get killed by them. They seem very unpredictable in nature, making them dangerous in my book. Dave |

I think you are right, any situation can cause an animal to become dangerous. Like the time I shot a wild turkey in Northern California. It was flopping all around and I didn't want to put another load of shot in it so I just ran up and grabbed it. Holey cow... That dang bird almost did me in. Next day I was bursed and scratche all over. I learned my lesson. | |

Elephant(HUGE with thick hide), Rhino(Almost as huge with thick hide and more prone to strike I'd think), Cape Buffalo(Usually don't hurt you until you hurt them), Hippo(BIG thick hide and will charge), Lion, Leopard.

Without reading others posts, I recall reading somewhere that Buffalo were #1, followed by Hippo. Accurate? Ron |

Without reading everything posted and never having had hunted african game, I will just say this: I consider cats to be the ultimate land predator aside from humans, they are very fast, very strong, very stealthy. They have superior reflexes and an array of devastating weapons which are kept in top form. I consider cats the most dangerous game. Now if the question being asked is which dangerous african game animal has killed more people, my answer is the hippo. To answer which is the meanest after being wounded I will say that i have heard/read that the cape buffalo takes the prize. I will offer that I think more buffalo have been hunted/wounded/killed by hunters and therefor have a larger "statistcal base", unofficial or not, than lions and leopards. If I were faced with a choice to go into the brush after a wounded lion vs. a wounded buffalo. I wound choose the buffalo hands down. |
