mulies in wyoming

These question's have more and likly been ask in the past but i could not find it anywere in here.

What caliber of rifle and bullet weight would any of you guys/gals use for mule deer in Wyoming?

I have never hunted them before. largest game ive hunted is whitetail in north west PA. i use either a 270 win 130 gr core lok or a 308 win 150 gr core lok. or a 50cal black powder 290 gr bullet with 100 gr of powder in the barrel.

cooker, as far as penitration goes the 270 should be fine, they are basically just like whitetails as far as hide thickness, the only thing you want to think about is how long of a shot you are willing to take and how comfy you are taking it. im sure you never need to take a shot longer than 200 in PA, in wyoming that could be a very real possibility, 270 is a great flat shooting rifle, i would use that and practice long shots w/ different weights.

.270 is just fine. Shoot away and best of luck.

Either the .308 or .270 would be bad medicine for mulies. Find the one that you shoot best with at long ranges and choose that one. While most mulies are taken at less than 200 yds, you may need to reach out to 300 yards or so.

I'm from Buffalo, WY we use anything from a .243 (my first deer was with a .257Roberts with I think 165gr SP) to 8mm(wtf). My dad uses a Ruger MKII .270 for Elk and Deer, I got a Remington 700 .30-06 and use 165(i think) Winchester Silver Box bullets.

There was a girl who I went to high school with who was luck enough to draw a PA elk tag. The elk she shot was 770 lbs and she used a .270. I would imagine that if a .270 is good for an elk that big than it should be plenty for a muley.

Thanks guys for the info. I always heard that you needed a 7mm-mag or 300 win mag for mulies.
I feel comfortable shooting out to 300yds with the 270. and i would limit my self to the 200 range with the 308 mainly because its a pump gun and i have not been shooting it that long.
I should have ask this question last week before i told my wife that i needed a new rifle for the up coming trip (so dont anyone say anything to her LOL) because she let me get one. but i guess you can never have too many guns!
But this info will be very helpful for buddy as well that going along and cant afford the trip and a gun he hunts a 308. so ill let him know that he has enough gun.

Wink

If I was mule deer hunting and had a choice between using a .270 or a .308, I would be taking the .270 as it would be plenty of rifle and be flatter shooting for a potential longer shot you would be seeing out west. Most important is to practice at the ranges (yards) you might be taking shots until you are comfortable at longer ranges. Also, either have a laser range finder or be familiar enough with area to estimate range (distance from a particular fence/tree line to other spots) and have steady shooting rest(s) (pack/fanny pack, jacket, etc). A .270 with 130 grain bullet would be plenty of gun, I would think....I have a .270 now that I use for whitetails and have had several .308's.

Oh and word from the wise...don't waste money on an out-of-state Antelope tag, they smell terrible are a pain to gut out cause the hair gets everywhere and they don't even taste good.

.243 accounts for quite a few mulies here in Arizona. .243 has 882 ft/lbs at 400 yards. That is plenty of energy and plenty of distance, considering there is a 22 inch drop.

we are going to try for just deer tags in Wyoming the exact part of your wonderful state im not sure yet a friend i work with has gone out a few times and were going with him to a ranch that he has hunted in the past.
But i do beleave that he said it was in mid NOV.
My next dumb question's for you is whats the weather like at that time of year and what are your orange requirments if any? im kinda counting on cold but not 100% sure what all should be packed you can PM if you would like im looking for any and all info i can get for this trip even know its not until 2010.

I currently live in Hershey PA but i hunt mostly in the NW part of PA were I am orginaly from about 60-70 south of Erie if your looking on a map. .

Its 1sq foot of orange, mind you don't put on your orange until you get out of your vehicle to hunt and all that we really wear is either a hat or one of those flagger vests. Weather wise its not too bad. I'd bring a pair of light boots and a pair of cold weather boots nothing too heavy weight wise cause you may be walkin a bit. Usually whether its really cold or not, if theres not too much snow we just long-john & blue jeans and 2 or 3 layers on the shirts. But yeah its not too terribly bad I'd bring a pair of carhart overalls just in case too.

As for PA I got family back in Pottstown, Gilbertsville and Boyertown areas all pretty much the same place now. The Very Best hot dog shop is by far the best hotdog I've ever eaten.

Cause everyone laughs at you and knows you're from out of state even if you're in a rent-a-car. Want to save you the humiliation and/or the local scumbaggery.
