Yep,yer right.The object of a bigger than necessary gun is to guarrantee that the bullet can get to the vitals.Shot placement is everything if you have power enough to carry through. sam.

Deer are not big animals in general. Just about any centerfire cartridge will get to the vitals if the correct bullets are used, and common sense is employed in the shot placement. Trying to shoot a deer in the ass [texas heart shot] to get to the chest with a 223 or 243 probably isn't a smart thing to do. But get a shot at the chest within 200 yds of the muzzle, and both will do the job. People just need to use good judgement as to what they are carrying and what they are hunting. Bigger guns don't always solve the problem. With the modern bullets, even light caliber guns will penatrate thru the vitals if the shooter places the bullet correctly.

Watch what yew says about Texas I ain't never shot a deer or any other critter except trespassers in the butt ever! But rock salt and bacon rinds make for an excellent floor show as them trespassers depart my property! LOL

If all you have is...pardon the phrase...a "Texas Heart Shot", it actually does the job quite well. Hits just about every vital on the way up. The last elk my great-grandpa shot was taken this way. It was the only angle he had since the elk was walking away from him. The elk dropped without as much as lifting a hoof and my great-grandpappy's hunting buddies couldn't find an entrance or exit wound. Later, as they were skinning it out, they discovered it was a perfectly executed corn-hole bulls-eye!

I'm a big fan of bullet placement with adequate power. I hate seeing people hunt 100-200 pound whitetail with a .300 ultra mag or similar as much as I hate them hunting with a .223 or .22/250. Guns in the .270, .280, 30/06, 25/06, or .308 class are more then enough to anchor a deer without bloodshotting half the meat like a magnum. Under a 100 yards I shoot deer in the neck if I can get a shot front-to-back or back-to-front, I don't like the sideways neck shot, to much can go wrong. Past a 100 yards I shoot 'em in the lungs/heart area. I have never hunted anything bigger then a Whitetail, so I won't make uneducated posts about that.
BTW, I've never had a deer go more then 25 yards after getting hit with 130 grain Core-Lockt out of my .270 Remington 700. The ones hit in the neck never make a step, I hate trailin' deer!

You got it Spot On.

Of course, there are rules for that in Florida. The bear must be approaching with intent upon- /in the process of -attacking you or other nearby humans, is the MAIN one.

But I've had a few get scruffy over downed hog/deer...usually kicking up a few dirt clods near 'em with the .50 & yelling scares 'em off.

I just hope I never HAVE to end up shooting one because it decided to attack instead of leaving...it'd be a royal pain of paperwork.

There is a point of diminishing returns in my book. For me 6.5x55 with a 160 grain and 7x57 or 280 Rem with a 175 grain is plenty to cover 90% of hunting on this planet.

Sadly 90% of the people who hunt don't know what SD is.
