Enough Gun vs Shot Placement

My first consideration is do I have enough whiskey. Next I decide if I have enough mixers. Then I decide what cartridge I am going to use for what game.

Now, I wish all you other fellars would get your priorities straight!

^ MIXERS?! ya don't MIX whiskey, ya drink it straight from the bottle! I won't even dilute whiskey with ice cubes.

Well,in my drinking days I was one of those wimps you fellers are talking about and even put ice cubes in beer. (but if no ice was available,I took it like a man) ,,sam.

All I use here in texas is a .22 hornet for everything. If we had bears I would use that too . I ear hole hogs and neck shoot the deer.

heres a big bodied buck I killed a few years back , he went 200lbs on the hoof. Dropped him where he stood with one shot from the Hornet. neck shot.

So the moral of the story is if you have less heft to your bullet you better be dead on accurate. bullet weight and size gives you insurance as long as you can still aim and shoot straight.

So, to sum it up, when using inadequate cartidges for the job at hand, one must be proficient enough to strike the brain or spine, if you were using a cartridge suitable for the job, you wouldn't need to worry about it!

I just dont have any fun busting a deer from 300 yds out with a 300 mag.
Small calibers are more challenging, a little more distance than a bow but not like big calibers.
I have always shot head and neck, for 30+ years now. South Texas sucks to be tracking animals through the thick thorny brush on your hands and knees in rattlesnake country, specially looking for a hog at night in there bedroom. I would rather drop them on the spot.
We also use feeders, not much challenge using a 300 mag sitting over a feeder.
Its not for kids but for the expierienced hunter its ok.
Even though my kid has taken some with the Hornet as well, but I am sitting with him and coaching him and hes on a good rest .heres one he took this past deer season using the Hornet.

I used to work with a Korean war vet and he would complain that .30 Carbine round wouldn't even stop charging Koreans. He related tales of having to shoot individuals dressed in winter clothes five or six times. I spend most of my time with a .30-06 but i have a bit of experience with the 45-70 and .450 Marlin including hunting Large game. With that said a .458 Win. mag is on my list of things to buy for this year (I may go with the Lott however) because I like big bores. They are a thrill to shoot and depending where you hunt they can be a great life insurance policy.

Was Townsend Whelen in the same time period as Jack O'Connor? If I remember correctly, he also liked the .270, but said that it was slightly less versatile than his ''beloved .270".

I heard about these from a guy up your way on a chainsaw site that a gun thread was started on. Apparently the maker only puts out about 50 a year and getting on his list is extremely difficult. Did you watch the short clip of the Buffalo being shot?

I have been either good, or lucky, (probably lucky), but I have yet to ever have to trail an animal. I have shot deer and hogs with rifles, shotguns, muzzleloader, and with a bow. If you hit them in the kill zone properly, they don't go very far. The farthest I've had one travel from the spot where I shot it was a deer that I shot with a bow. It was a high lung shot. She went all of 60 yards and fell over. The only one I've dropped where it stood was a boar I shot wth a .50 cal muzzle loader.

Often you see all kinds of pictures and hear how great an inadequate cartridge worked so great.What they don't talk about is the 5to 10 that ran off wounded so they didn't get a picture.I use a Hornet a lot and know what it will do.It can be used in set shots but is not adequate for running shots where bullet placement is doubtful. ,,,sam.
