There stands someone who had big brass ones hangin' down there. My personal opinion is the correct firearm to go after bear with sits in the turret of an Abrams tank!

There is a difference between killing something that is standing still, and trying to stop it whfrom killing you!

Sure, one could walk right up to a cape buff or brown bear and shoot them in the eye with a .223, but what if they decided to come at you before you could get close enough?

Then yer' goose is cooked!

I'm too much of a coward to hunt something that bites back with a pea shooter

Why, I walked right up to a Grizzly last week! What is so special about that? I walked up to it and it didn't move an inch. Of course, I don't think it had moved in the 20 years it has been on display at the museum either.

Them bears must of been hibernateing when that nit wit shot them. Really I wonder how many shots did it take to kill them.
Being an Honest responsible sportsman (hunter) I would call this guy a SLOB hunter for useing a rifle like he's useing.
Is'nt that a 30 cal. ?

This is Stupid !...And I agree with my cuzzin Midas...A.H

I should recognize that man, I've seen his picture before. He was, or is a professional hunter who hunted all over the world, mostly with a .243 Win. I believe his name was O'Connor. He and Elmer Kieth used to publish articles arguing with each other over the caliber necessary to take big game. Elmer supported the big calibers with lots of knockdown while O' Connor advocated the fast, flat shooting smaller calibers.

This is the only pic I could find of J.O. in the early days
I don't think the guy with the 2 bears is the same

The hunter is Harold Hargrave. The bears were taken at Funter Bay, AK. Evidently his 30cal was enough gun for the shots he took.

I got to go with A.H. and Midas on this issue. However, there is "something" to be said for the hunter who insists on using a target round for buffs and bears, and that is that despite the wisdom of many old hunters, there are always some who insist on "culling" via the Darwinian method.

Right after you do it, I'm not the one trying to prove something.

Don't really understand the hostility some of you guys are showing, I had kinda thought that this thread was tongue in cheek from the get go.

But then again, when it comes to discussing cartridges, feathers will always get ruffled.

Texn - Now that is the kind of bravery that I admire and exhibit myself.

I once knew a woman who killed two grizzlys with a 250/3000 M99 Savage. Not that I'd recomend it though.

It's not O'Connor, but I had a friend who hunted in Africa with a White Hunter who had guided O'Connor and said he killed more with his typewritter than his gun.
