Vermilion hnter welcome to G&G. I am not sure the DNR will by to much help but it wouldn't hurt to call. Also look into AZ ferral hog hunting laws as I have heard there were alot of them along the Virgin river just north of Mesquite. Everytime I talk to someone I hear something different. I have only spoken to two people who I know for a fact actually have hunted and killed wild boar up there. One was duck hunting and floating down the river when they jumped a small one and the other guy has taken a few from just north. The area he told me to goto now has the access blocked off by a housing tract and no hunting signs posted. I have been up there but haven't seen any. The area is very dense with brush so you have very limited sight and not to mention snakes. I was advised that cooler weather is the best time to go as the snakes are not active and that's one less thing to worry about.
The Coyote hunting is pretty good up around there so you could try and go for hog but if you strike out you can always take a few calls and try for coyote.

thank you pal 8. We are going to try and go up there with our dogs and look. I seen you also mentioned duck hunting, being from northern MN, I always enjoy a good duck hunt. That would give me all the more reason to go up there and scout around. To get a pig, would be a major bonus. I would also like to go on a muley hunt, all in good time. Once again, thanks for the info. have a good night all.

Vermilion good luck on your search. Watch out for snakes as I have been told there are many out there since the brush is thick and full of mice and other small critters that snakes like.

Mesqute boar

I have hunted pigs in mesquite a couple of times starting back in the early 80s. The pigs that are there are not native pigs they where imported from Russia and are not considered game that is the reason that there is no hunting license or tag required.

Thanks gibb74 and welcome to gun & game. Now that temps are dropping and my wife is no longer working weekends I do plan on spending some time up there in Mesquite looking for them.

Cool

Hi, I'm new here, you all look like a great group. Just what I have been looking for since I moved to SoUtah.

OK, I am about an hour North of Mesquite. I would be happy to have a couple guys meet at my home and take one vehicle and maybe the 4 wheelers out and see what we can scare up. I drive a tour bus and am off for the season. Chopping firewood and cleaning around the property and working on cars and etc. is getting old. I need an excuse to go out with the 45/70 BFR anyway. Maybe just the 44 will do or the 357, or maybe one of the SA 45s....

Anyway, I am not far from Caliente either. I wonder if there are hogs in the Enterprise, UT area? I'll have to check. Utah's laws with regard to hogs are pretty lax if I remember correctly. I'll check and report.

any interest?

Mel

Planning to make a trip soon. Is the quail huntung down there worthwhile if a guy strikes out on pigs? I'll post when I get back with a report.

Mesquite hogs

My buddy and I took up the search for pigs the day after Christmas. This was my second attempt I found a little info on the arizona fish and game website. It said the pigs have been sighted traveling between Black Rock Mountain and Mud mountain. My previous trip I seen some pig sign near Mud Mountain but nothing around Black Rock Mountain .In my opinion Black Rock is to high in elevation and a waste of time. This trip we focused on the river bottoms near Mesquite and Littlefield there was pig sign and ALOT of willow bushes with game trails right thought the middle of them.We came across a homemade blind built next to the one of the trails near the river. Considering the terrain I think the only way to hunt these animals is to use dogs or build a blind and bait them in, Spot and stalk would be extremely hard.I'm interested in trying it again if anyone is interested

Welcome to Gun and Game IrishBilly. I too found it difficult at best to spot and stalk there. I would think a blind and bait is your best bet but for me I just can't get out there enough to hunt that way.

Around that time period, Sundays would be my only time off to do this. But otherwise, sounds good...

Nevada Hogs

I've been reading the blogs on this board for awhile and have found a lot of good info. Anyone have any new info? I think I'm ready to try my luck.

This posting on another forum seems to be a little more positive in our quest to find them pigs. Question not answered is "when or how recent" did these contacts see or take these animals.

"I went out that way today to look into the 'legend of the feral pig'. It turns out if you talk to anybody in the Mesquite area, it is just that...a legend. I talked to the guy who runs most of the fields down in the river valley, and he says there aren't any problems with them there. They don't seem to harm the area, though I did see some tracks down further by the river.

Moving east, there were more reports of guys not only seeing them, but some shooting them, and even taking them somewhat frequently. The Littlefield area is where it's at. I ran out of daylight before I got to scout the area very well, having spent most of the day in the Mesquite area, but the next time I go out, i will spend more time on the Arizona side.

If anybody wants to take a drive out there, I'm usually willing on the weekends for a trip. I am in the Las Vegas area. Its about an hour and a half drive from here. "

I was just turned onto this site by a friend because of this thread, so my $.02 worth...

I hunted these hogs 20 years ago. Back then they were Russians who'd gotten loose from the hunting ranch, as was stated before. Last time I was down to the sporting clays range outside of Mesquite there werel some of the boar mounts hanging up on the wall.

The best luck was early mornings and sundown floating the river just down stream of Littlefield on the Arizona side. Back then they were still big enough that a serious "stopper" was needed, leave the duty sidearms and .223 in the truck. Shotguns were "bear loaded", alternating slugs and 00 buck.

I'd thought they'd all be gone by now, but it doesn't sound like it. Might be time to take a little drive.

btw, the Mesquite cops have no sense of humor and there own gun laws...as in they better not be loaded while in city limits. This means handguns too.

I bought it just case! What everyone says now....is you can use any weapon, hunt any time and use any method (night lights). Everyone seems to welcome us to come up and get rid of these hogs/pigs. I have been invited to hunt there any time I like. Now to make the time.

I bought my hunting license just in case we run across a BLM or Fish and Game, I just won't to out there hunting/shooting and run into any trouble.

I think we all have to check with the local laws in each county and double check before we go hunting. I'm doing my homework now.....I plan to lead a small group of hunting friends and see what out there....I did see a lot of damage these hogs do! Big deep tracks, big hogs are out there.

Good advise, hunt with someone who is going to watch your back while you field dress one of these hogs.

Good luck
