Yeah I've been applying for Maine for years now and no luck. But between me and my wife we have pulled four tags in the other NE states. Almost five because last year my wife made the alternate list for NH but it never got down to her.

I have had bear meat[black] and I am not a fan.
I shot problem bears around the farm or ones
that have been wounded by bow hunters.
I am sure more bears are lost by bow hunters
than are found. Just hunting them for sport is
not my thing. I have no problem with those who do,
except the bow hunters that would rather let a animal
suffer than track it. It has become such a problem that
most farmers around here will not allow bow hunting
for anything bigger than deer.

This weekend is set for some more moose hunting! The guys are hunting Saturday + Sunday. I can only join them Sunday since I have to keep my shop open Saturday. But I've gotten their permission to hunt alone all through Friday, so I will!! I'll probably stay put in one of the hunting towers with long range up wind ability, since I think sneaking around trying to get a moose in sight is more likely fooling myself... It will be a great day!!

my last bear was taken above the 4000 foot mark, no fish in its diet, only blueberries
the meat had no smell at all. it was perfect
heres how i do the meat
i add 2 or 3 % pork to it and some spices and grind the shoulders into sausage.
i take the tenderloins and the backstrap and roll it in cajun seasonings and sear it over a fire, then pressure cook it for 2 hours.
when i open a jar, i inspect it for any thing other than choice meat and shred it, then i add sweet baby rays bbq sauce and bring that up to a boil.
man its awesome.
the sausage i keep half and donate half to the local homeless shelter and i have yet to have a single complaint.
i dont eat brown bears.
i track my animals and retrieve them, regardless.

if you plan on an alaskan moose hunt, be ready for bear encounters. they will be plentiful.

Any bears Grizzly or black encounters i have had were uneventful.
They are curious buggers tho and caution is warranted for sure'
Cougars scare me worse, you cant shoot a blur.

I eat black bear also. Steaks remind me of well-aged ribeyes.

OK, so the past weekend went up in smoke. Can't believe how fast time is running out when one takes a few days off from work. I was out in the terrain all of Friday by myself. I saw one moose out of range, and I heard two others that wouldn't show themselves. The largest capricaille ever flew by, size of a small airplane! But no moose shot.
Saturday and Sunday we got up 8 men both days, and didn't find a single fresh footprint. And I tell you, we covered some ground!! My suspicion was correct. I pack of wolves passed through our terrain this weekend, scaring off anything with four legs. They are now in an area some 10 miles north of us. The Alfa female has a radio collar with a GPS, so I can see her on a map on the internet. Or at least where she was, yesterday...
Wolves are not supposed to settle in our area, so this pack may be moved to some place else during winter. But for now we have to struggle with them. Crap...

That pic is all over the internet. People have claimed to have taken it in every state and province that has moose. I checked Snope's and they say it was taken in Ontario.
