of all the deer I've taken I only had 1 gut shot. in a pouring rain my blackpowder gun hang fired. the deer heard the cap go off and started to react as the charge went off. that was a nasty mess that I will avoid ever repeating.

I always used the classic behind the shoulder shot till I read an artical in a mag. a few year ago, then I switched to the high on shoulder. Their just isn't all that much meat on the front shoulder to mess up and that shot drops them in their tracks. It's still a fairly forgiving shot, not as much as the classic but but still pretty good sized spot. If you miss high you hit spine low leg and chest, forward the neck and back your in the heart lung spot. The only head shot I ever took was on a buffalo (bison) but their heads are really big and it's the best way to put them down fast.

I vote for the lung/heart shot. The most a deer ever went after being hit was 15 yards, and most dropped after 1 or 2 steps. I use 150 gr CoreLokt from 30-06. The one that did go 15 yards was when I tried 125 gr bullets. Never again with those. I also don't like cutting away that 'jelly' that use to be meat.

A 150 grain 30-06 behind the shoulder means deer down right now.

I agree with the 165-169 BTs also will do the job. Mostly I was talking the smaller Texas whitetails. For the bigger muleys I might even think the 168 BTSP would be better. Since I had the same shot placement with the 125gr pills I conclude they were less effective. Whether it was bullet structure or weight is debatable. I'm coming to believe it is about #1 shot placement and #2 bullet construction. There needs to be some good combination of the two to work right, not just one or the other. Some other combinations of higher velocity light bullets might work, but I know 30 cals, either CoreLokt or Silvertip at 150 grs or better, will work. Heavier fast or slow bullets of larger caliber will also work fine, but for me I don't need the extra recoil. |

I consider anything 130gr and under in .30cal varmint bullets with rapid expansion/fragmentation and just too frangible for game over 80lbs.To me that is just asking for bullet failure. ,,,sam.

with me it depends on the gun i'm using. if i'm hunting with my 35 remington i'll take the shoulder shot if I cant get the quartering away shot. with my 300WM i'll take the high heart shot. if the round strikes a rib on the way in I've found bone fragments embedded around the exit hole. even if it misses ribs they stagger sideways a bit before attempting to flee but never go far. (most times I see em go down). now, if the round contacts a rib on the way in and another one on the way out it knocks em down hard. it's like flipping a switch. the most dramatic one taken with the 300: I was hunting in the mountains of Virginia, covering a wide long plateau part way up the mountain. the plateau ended to my left into a small spring valley about 20 feet deep. this nice 8 point buck was walking down the opposite ridge of this short narrow valley. I had the scope on him and esitmated the range at about 150, give or take, when he spotted some hunters moving far below us. he bolted into the spring valley and to my suprise was coming straight at me up onto the plateau. just as he was making his entrance up the hillside and onto the plateau he was starting to jump a deadfall tree. my 165 gr. struck him between the front legs and hit the spine at 80 yds out while his front feet were off the ground. that deer did a back flip into the valley. the last I saw thru the scope was his whole underside then his rear feet as he disappeared back into the creek bottom. when I walked up to the edge his nose was pointing downhill. I just stood there for a second looking at my rifle and thinking "dang, thats what ya call getting the s**t knocked out of ya". thats been almost 20 years ago, but I still remember it like it was yesterday.

No. Just in front of the shoulder. Something for the double lunger's to think about. If my forward of shoulder shot is a little off I either miss or hit on shoulder, if however you double lunger's are a bit off you hit shoulder OR gut. Which is better? The only time this lung shot is real is if these animals are standing boardside or quartering away, any other time it's not on. As for the .223, on this size deer the 223 is more logical than say a 30-06 with a big heavy bullet which has a much higher chance of passing through and doing much less damage than my 223. The only time the 06 would win in this situation is the Texas heart shot. That deer was whacked in front of shoulder, it did a 360 and fell over dead. Job done.
