would the remington 700 xcr compact tactical .308 work for deer and boar? and out to what range?

It will work for either, as far as you can accurately shoot... or 421.6 yds, which ever is shorter.

It will work for both and you have an effective range of 500 yards with the .308...gonna need a good scope to go along with though for that range.
Comparable to the 30/06 in ballistics but the 06 will give you an additional 100 yards effective range.
