| Antelope Hunting on the Prairie
Myself and three friends are out on the prairie of South Dakota, north of the Black hills, antelope hunting. It's rather difficult as the antelope have gotten out where there is no way of getting close for an easy shot. Most shots are at 300+ yards. I took a doe at 334 yds by holding high with the rifle. Then, I had to drag it out almost a mile to the nearest road. Antelope can see real good and trying to sneak up on a herd is nigh on impossible. Timmy did sneak up on a bedded down buck and took him under 200yds. John hit a buck late and it ran off so he will go back in this morning and retrieve it, if the coyotes left anything for him. Paul is wheelchair bound and can shoot from the van but hasn't had a shot yet. He has raised the rifle though.

I really miss SoDak. This is the first time in three years that I couldn't go due to poor job situation. The last two years I hunted south of the Black Hills. Way to though I'm glad to hear someone is enjoying it.

Good job. And you're right about antelope vision, it's pretty incredible. On flat terrain many shots are 300+ yards. Their vision can make for a difficult hunt. Good shooting. We used to hunt the broken terrain south of the Missouri River breaks when I grew up in Montana so it was easier to get closer. Antelope are one of the reasons I'm happy Marlin came out with the 308 and 338 MX. My 30-30 ain't gonna reach that far. |

Got three more antelope today. One was shot last night and Paul saw it out from the road walking so he dropped it with his 25-06. Then Paul shot another buck and I had to hike in and find it for the finishing shot. I then took another doe, again just out past 300yds. Windy and snowing now but will head back out this afternoon.

| Three of us have 3 tags but Paul applied and recieved leftover tags so he'll be real busy. These antelope taste pretty good. not as good as Iowa deer but much better than Texas or Minnesota deer.

| Yeah. I use my .300winmag and it's great for long shots but devastating when it hits. I hit this doe at about 315yds and could hear the bullet "thump!" the 'lope and watched it fall. This is the exit wound( a little graphic)

I spose the only antelope that would taste good are the ones that feed on hay pastures and where theres little to no sagebrush around. One of the reasons I don't eat Mulies around here; they're too sagey but not as bad as Antelope. I try to stick to White-tail and elk.

Good job Rambo looks like you're having a great time up there hunting. It does look like you pretty much gutted that last one with that shot though. I think you will be lucky to see 50lbs of meat out of that one. Sheesh what bullet are you using? The deer I shot with the my 300WM didn't look anything like that but I was using a 200gr Sierra Game King.

Tim shot another antelope last night. We shot two whitetail does this morning, filling our only two doe deer tags. Couldn't connect on the antelope this morning. Heading back out later today.
