what is your favorit deer rifle

i was just wondering what rifle, caliber and bullet of chocie the good folks at gg like to take to the woods with when after deer.

my favorite is my browning a bolt 7mm rem mag with a pentax whitetails unlimted 3x10x40 and just to add my favorit round to shoot in that gun is a nosler BT 150 gr with my own little cocktail of imr 7828

if i am going deer hunting that is the gun i reach for the most.

I also am very fond of the 7mm caliber but i don't need the mag cannon to kill a little deer. I find that a 7x57 works exceptionally well when fed a 120 ballistic tip backed by IMR4831.

Kinda depends on my mood and the area I'm hunting. I have a Win Ultralight 1886 with buckhorn sights in .45/70 that I really like (it's kinda new to me, but I've been fortunate enough to take two elk and a deer with it), and if I'm hunting an area where open sights are appropriate I grab it, but I also have a Rem 700 in .270 that is a tack driver with 130 grainers that is a great deer rifle. Guess it depends if I just read something about or by Teddy R., or Jack O'Conner :-)

On the subject of core-lokts, I have 700 ADLs in 06 and in 270 and both those rifles shoot those cheapest core-lokt ammo better thn anything I've found, and I've tried several dif brands that are considerably higher priced.

My go-to rifle for almost everything now is my Win. Mod. 70 Black Shadow in .270. It usually wears a Sightron SI 3x9x40 but right now I've got a BSA Huntsman on it (wanted to see how they compared). I generally shoot 130 gr. Rem. Core-Loct's or Nosler BT's, but I'm working on a couple of different 140 gr. loads. FWIW, the 130 gr. CL's put a serious whuppin' on deer and hogs (up to 300+ lbs so far.)

I agree with the core-lockt assessments....I've put as many kinds of ammo through my .270 as I could find. and it shoots the CLs best...they shoot well in every gun I own, the only hunting ammo I buy is core-lockts...LOL I wish they had 7.62x54r core-lockts...have to settle with Brown Bear I guess.

My favorite deer rifle isn't even mine. My grandpa's pre 64 mod70 in 300H&H. I have seen that him take deer's head's off. You dont have to chase em that way.

I don't care if it's a .460 Weatherby,if that gun takes the head clear off a deer,you are shooting too small of a deer.Leave the fawns alone and go after adult deer. ,,,sam.

My Marlin 336 Texas, with a Leupold VXI 2-7x33 in Warne QR mounts.
The bullet is Sierra's Prohunter 30-30, 170 grs.
I have the telescopic sight of when I go with the rifle in the woods, and mounts it if necessary, but I shoot mostly with open sights.

My favorite Deer rifle is my Marlin leveraction in .375 Winchester. It knocks deer down in there tracks.
I bought a Ruger Hawkeye boltaction in 308 2 years ago but I have'nt used it yet.
I bought it to semi-retire the Marlin.
Before the Marlin my favorite rifle was my retired Remington 742 in 30-06.

Of these rifles the Marlin 375 is my favorite though...A.H

It leaves about half of it on. No waste unless you eat the head.

Some people just can't understand that a bullet designed for strong resistance from larger game will not release hardly energy inside smaller game with little resistance.A .30 cal bullet designed to penetrate all the way through an elk or moose,including bone is strong enough that if it hits an antelope or smaller deer it will not expand in them enough to release energy to do great damage.Instead they work a lot like a FMJ which doesn't expand and zips through leaving a very small wound channel.Even if a bullet has 5000lbs energy,if it doesn't expand will not release nearly the energy as a bullet with say 2000lbs that expands and releases a large amount of its available energy.Ft lbs make energy available.Bullet action puts energy to work. ,,,sam.

Dad and I use my Rem 700 in .30-06 with 150gr Win. Super-X and his Ruger M77 MKII .270 with 150gr Rem Core-Lokts for everything (deer and elk).

My favorite is a Husqvarna 5000 .30-06 which is basically a factory made custom Mauser 96.

I have so many to chose from it's difficult to pick just one. But, if forced to chose I'd pick my Remington Model 7 with the 18.5" barrel. It's chambered for the 260 Remington and will shoot 129 Hornady SP bullets into nice little clusters. It's killed alot of deer for me from ranges as close as 20yds to over 250 yds. No deer has required a second shot and they always die very quickly.

That being said, I'm bringing 2 virgin guns to NC for a deer hunt. The Marlin XL-7 in '06 is the most accurate factory gun I own, and the Remington 750 carbine in 308 has also earned it's way into the guncase headed for NC. MAybe one of them will try to become my favorite hunting gun this year.
