How smart are pigs?

OK guys, these are pics of the hog trap directly in front of our deer blind. As most of you know, we've got a pig or two around here, so why aren't we catching more in our traps? This trap uses a very simple trigger consisting of a stick holding the door open @ about a 45 deg. angle with the bottom edge of the door a tad over 12 in. off of the ground. This lets the coons, rabbits, possums, and small piglets in and out without closing the door. I pour about 20 lbs of corn into the rear of the trap and then pour a line out about 6-8 ft. leading into the trap. I usually sprinkle a bit all around the trap as well to keep them interested. As you can see, these guys have figured out that they can't bump the door, at one point (last pic # 0029) this boar is actually about 98% inside the trap but he never trips the door despite being around 200 lbs., he goes in then backs out (the key to the pics are to look at the ground, there is a cross-bar at the entrance to the trap and you can see both sides if you look closely):

Don't string the corn outside,put it all inside.Also,put some brush over posts and wire.(partially)Wearing rubber boots and gloves doesn't hurt when walking near and handling grain. ,,,sam.

sounds like you need a different trigger mechanism. I read a lengthy post buy a guy on AR15.com who traps them and it's pretty detailed and has lots of pics showing how he does it.

There are several ways of attracting them into the trap and tripping the door, I was just illustrating how intelligent these guys really are. I'll probably change my trigger up (again) just to trip them up a bit, but after they see what happens, they get real leery around them. I also need to build a hog log to alert me at night because our deer blind blocks out most of the noise and I've been known to sleep through a herd coming through.

both domestic and wild hogs have a keen mind. Personally, I feel in combination with their sense of smell and hearing they surpass domestic dogs in terms of coping with changing environments.

From what I have always been told pigs are as smart or smarter than a dog, and I know a buddy of mine has to move his traps after he cathes a few hogs before they pickup on his lil scheme lol. he said they move em around 2-3 times a mounth i believe.

I remember someone once told me pigs are 3rd on the intelligence scale while dogs are like 7th I think...if memory serves.

Toolman,Pigs are a pretty smart critter,but your door trigger does need some tweakin. Deer on the other hand must be dumb as hell on my buddies ranch,so far this season they have caught a 12pt,6pt,and a 10pt in the hog traps. The 10 & 12pt had to have crawled inside,the trap isn't very tall at the door opening,the 6pt went into the bigger trap. I laughed when he called me and asked how he could get them out-alive,but I told him to cover the trap with a tarp for a few minutes and then open the door and they would get out - it worked everytime!!

Swing the gate from the other way, even if their not in a whack on the aRse will soon have them in. lmao.

This design below works very well, once there half in they don't want to back out.

also so you mite try putting in another gate.......not a trip gate, but one that the hogs can root up and get under but not get back thru....we use a square tubing gate with an angle iron frame and set it so it anlges into the trap.....it takes some perfecting but once you get the design down the pigs just keep coming in .......we caught 24 one night and only 10 or so were caught with the initial trip gate.......we left them in ther for a couple of days and ended up with a few more

You guys want to trap them, I want to come and shoot them. Not that I want to shoot them in the trap, though I guess some of the pay to shoot places are not much far off of that. You have some nice colors to the one in the pics. Ever get any tanned with the fur on?

The 10 & 12pt had to have crawled inside,the trap isn't very tall at the door opening,the 6pt went into the bigger trap. I laughed when he called me and asked how he could get them out-alive,but I told him to cover the trap with a tarp for a few minutes and then open the door and they would get out - it worked everytime!!
