Factory .270 recommendations

Im new to the whole deer hunting thing, in fact Im new to hunting in general....

So now that I have my first dedicated deer hunting rifle, Ruger M77 in .270 winchester I need some ammo recommendations.

I sighted it in with 130 grain Remington Express Core- Lokt. This is a flat nosed bullet with an exposed tip. Its designed (or at least advertised) for maximum mushrooming and expansion. In fact there wasnt a whole lot of sighting in required, it was still dead on with only a half MOA windage adustment for me from the previous owner. I got some pretty good groups with it. The rifle is very lightly used from my older neighbor who doesnt hunt anymore and its older than I am but its in great condition and Im really happy with it.

Is there something better though in terms of ammo? My store sells a bunch of different loads.

The Core- Lokt was comparatively cheap at around $20 for a box of 20 all the way up to stuff like the Winchester Supreme Elite XP3 bonded ammo which is like $40 for a box of 20.

Is this double the price really that much more effective for hunting or what?

I want to sight my rifle in with the exact round Im gonna hunt with and I was just wondering what experiences everyone else might have.

And Yes Im aware of all the benefits of hand loading and No I don't do it and dont have any plans in the near future to get into it so please keep any responses to factory loads please.

Core-Lokt is perfect. It's cheap and works exactly as advertised.

I have had great results with 150 grain Core-Lokts. Never used 130's as I like heavy bullets for penetration.

I shoot the Core-Lokt in a couple of my guns. It's a good bullet, and hits like a freight train.

That said, in my 7mm Mag at 3200fps it fragments and makes a mess. But in a non magnum caliber I use them all the time.

I would recommend Winchester 130gr *Silver Tips* (NOT Power Points) for .270 Winchester. I haven't used .270 in Core Lokts, but have used .308 in Core Lokts and have NOT been impressed with their terminal performance. I have been VERY impressed with the Winchester Silver Tips, though.

Dad uses 150gr core lokts for deer and elk has taken both very successfully.

The core loks will work just dandy, deer aren't hard to kill, just hit 'em somewhere besides the hind quarters.

i to would recommend some sort of ballstic tip wheter it be winchesters silver tip or federals premium line with balstic tip. with that said i would pick the federals because i do not like the silver tips due to the moly coating on them, just my thoughts

well for .270 for deer i use either a 150 or 180 grain remington core-lokt or winchester.

130 gr. Core-Lokts work great for deer as do Win. PP's. As stated previously, deer aren't hard to kill, it's more about shot placement. If you elect to use a ballistic-tip bullet, try to avoid the shoulder as I've heard of two deer in the area being lost (one by my BIL) after being hit with a BT that apparently exploded on the bone. I've got some 130 gr. Nosler BT's loaded up but haven't tried them because the Core-Lokts works so well.

What I was recommending was the older style (still made, though) Winchester *Silver Tips*, NOT the Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips. I haven't used the newer Ballistic Silver Tips, but experience with Nosler Ballistic Tips was not a good experience. Someone that has used the Winchester Ballistic Silver Tips pipe up and give their experience with this product.

i have hunted and killed lots of deer with130 cor loks in a 270 and i have never had one walk more than 3-4 steps from were it was standing from when i pulled the trigger, and this shots have been made in the flat field setting, and in the hard woods of NW PA. i sight my rifle in at 100 yds and it will shoot 3 shot groups the size of a quater. and i have taken whitetail out to 300yds with only holding about a inch high. for the price in my mind you cant go wrong with these bullets

I've never seen 180 grain in 270. And 130 grain is plenty of bullet for whitetail deer.

When I got a 700 in .270 I bet I bought 7 or 8 different kinds of ammo (some of it the premium high dollar stuff) to see what it liked best, and those cheap core-lokts shot quite a bit better than anything I found. I have use the 150s for elk, and they worked fine, and the 130s for deer and they worked great.

I use Winchester Power points 150 grain out of my .270 Vanguard and it seems to like em better than the Core Locks, but then again every gun is diffrent, just because my gun likes em doesnt meen yours will.

Very true, my gun shoots the cheap Federals the best. Tried some more expensive Hornady loads, but the cheap Federal shot a little better.

I tried federal fusions core lokts and winchester power points in my M77.270 All 150 grains and the winchesters grouped the best.Here's the proof.Last years buck.38
