Might have been asked before but what does everyone use to attract deer to the area in terms of scents/feeds...

I feed my deer the years around including but not limited to grain type foods and planted items also, along with minerals it keeps them healthy and it helps my fawn recruitment and the developement of good racks on my bucks.

Around here, the use of baits for deer has become a huge no-no due to CWD.. It's OK to plant corn, but don't put any ears or kernels out unless you're willing to give the DNR a nice amount of fine money..

As far as scents, I try not to smell like a French Whore, but that's about it. My dad smokes and has had to put a cigarette out before pulling the bow back to kill a deer on more than one occasion..

I use the neighboring 200 acres of field corn as an attractant. Works!

I never thought much of cleaning and quartering deer with corn falling out of their mouths either. When I was a member of a big hunt club, we planted pea fields to keep the deer in the area. As far as scents, I saw a man smoking a cigar drop a buck that ran right toward him in the middle of a drive. He shot him at point blank range just a few yards from him. Granted, he dropped a perfectly good cigar in the dirt. He was also wearing khaki pants, bright red suspenders, and a sky blue T-shirt. So much for high tech camo and expensive scents.

I've heard several guys say they had to put out a smoke to shoot deer that were really close. I wonder if it doesn't act as a scent mask? (not that I'd suggest taking it up)

Cigarette smoke isn't any more of a natural smell to deer than human stink.. Actually, smoke should be something that would make wild animals scared, but like you, I've heard the "put the smoke out" thing by a lot of people, including my Dad.. Not sure.. Most of the time his deer were killed during the rut, and the smell they were concerned about wasn't Marlboro Lights..

We must wear 50% blaze orange and hats must be blaze orange anytime a gun deer hunt is going on.. With the way the WI hunts have been for the last few years, you needed orange on pretty much all the time..
Also, I'm pretty sure mountain men killed a lot of animals and smelled pretty badly while doing so..

Blaze orange was never mandatory in our state except a hat "or" vest on state Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Most hunting in South Carolina is done on private family land or privately owned timberlands owned by Champion Paper, Westvaco or Georgia-Pacific, especially along the Atlantic seaboard. The big clubs that lease their land from the timber companies only recently (8-10 years ago) started wearing orange ball caps.

It is all in which way the wind is traveling at that time and where the animal is, if he cant smell it, he don't care.. In my younger years I smoked, even when hunting, have taken many more deer without the smokes with me, but I did take my largest buck with a bow and had to put down the stogey to do so... I guess the wind was in my favor that day... I just pay attention to the wind if possable and with some skill and more luck I will be ok....

This has gone from attractants to deterents! Has anyone here actually used Deer Caine and seen any effects? I currently put out about 40 lbs of corn a week in three stands. I tried some ragin acorns mixed with the corn in one location (deer actually seemed to dislike it) and some ruttin' apples in another spot (more deer on camera). What are some commercial or home made things people have used with success, I'm trying to find actual usage information, not like your uncle told you about this or that, but you actually did it and it worked.

It's all illegal here in Iowa. Don't know why it's sold here either.
