Things to be more self-reliant...

So I am sitting here at my desk staring out the window with my dog as I do most Sundays. It is a good time to think and watch people do the things they do. Started thinking about all the things we can do to become more self-reliant. This will just be a list, and little more, and in no particular order

  1. Hunt/trap animals
  2. Butcher and clean animals
  3. Reloading ammunition
  4. Gardening
  5. Animal Husbandry
  6. Wood stoves and fireplaces
  7. Chopping your own wood
  8. Doing your own car maintenance
  9. Doing your own house maintenance
  10. Biking/non motorized forms of transportation
  11. Food processing
  12. Welding/blacksmithing
  13. Medicinal plant growing
  14. Home-brewing
  15. Sewing/mending
  16. Knitting/crochet
  17. Hair cuts
  18. Water collection and purification
  19. Flint-knapping
  20. Power generating
That's all I could really come up with. All of that is pretty possible in the right location. I would really like to get into gardening but don't have a yard at my house, our back yard is a parking lot. I've started looking into trapping animals here, probably won't be getting into hunting since I will be leaving in August and elk season isn't until fall. Add any others you have come up with and comment on ones you have already started doing.

    Well I must say I lack self reliance.

    I hunt, semi butcher/clean animals [with cousin/uncles help].

    My girlfriend cuts my hair. :D

    That's a good list of self-reliance knowledge and skills...

    ...and, I've got a few of them underway (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18 and 20).

    Not sure that I'll need the home brewing...

    ...unless I trade the stuff with nearby natives.

    Good call, the less we depend on others the more, we'll be free. Nothing major just a few chickens, ducks and maybe a turkey, will make a great addition to our food storage.
