Incident At The Shooting Range

Posted 11-14-2007 at 07:40 PM by Midas
My son and I were at the shooting range this evening, we were having a good time, shooting rifles and handguns. But a couple of booths down from us, there was an old man, he was your typical elderly man, he had short gray hair, was wearing a green boonie hat, and had on a pair of bifocals. There was nothing out of the ordinary about him, so we continued to shoot for probably close to an hour. All of a sudden, the old man comes over to our booth, at first i didn't know why, then he glanced at my son and asked "that boy gonna join the military?, he sure is good with that gun, he'd make a fine serviceman" I told the old man that he didn't have any plans to join. The old man took offense to this, he told my son "whats your problem, young man, is this country not good enough for you to die for?" I gave the man a stern look, and asked him what branch of the service he served in, he said that he never served, because he had to work on the farm. He then made the statement "kids these days don't know how good they got it, they sit around all damn day, and they expect the older folks to do all the work". He was obviously aiming these remarks at Chris (my boy). I told the old fart to take his remarks else where, because i didn't wanna hear it. He left the range shortly after. What I'm trying to get out of this, is that HYPOCRISY is destroying our country, the old man berated my son for not wanting to join the military, yet HE himself had never even stepped foot inside a recruiting office.

yep. Just like when you're raised by parents who say don't smoke, but knock out at least a pack a day. Just plain stupid.

wow he has no right to say anything like that, joining the service is an important decision and should be your own decision...he doesn't have to right to say that even if he had served but thats just plain dumb

Gosh I wished I could of been there ! I would of let him rant and I wouldn't of minded.
I find the elderly interesting to listen to and I bet after a while he might of settled down.
Midas if he comes back befriend him and then pick his brain to find out more about his life, most old folks don't mind talking about there younger days...A.H

it would have been bad enough coming from a veteran, but what a hipocrit, and AH, I doubt that you would have let him talk to your son that way

I think I'd have to call his a** on that one. I don't suffer hypocrytes lightly. If he'd served, he'd have the right to ask\judge. My dad tried to join the Marines just before Korea but was refused due to knee probs., He always had guys asking him why he wasn't out supporting our country when they were the same freaking age!

He had no right to speak to your son like that. I would have been offended if it had been my son. I am one of those grayhaired old men but please don't judge us all by that one.

being old doesnt give you a license to be a butthole.
i have many elderly buddies and none of them would dream of saying something like that.

He was a jerk; a veteran, would not likely acted that way. You showed remarkable restraint, my friend. As a veteran, I feel if you can't serve, don't set in judgement over the rest of us.
Just my 2c worth.

AH, I agree that the elderly do get lonly and sometimes just want to talk to someone and many do have wonderful tales to tale, but this was just a crabby old man and he had absolutly no right to talk to Chris that way, and I am sure had he actually been a Veteran he would not have acted in that manner because he would have know that the battles he fought was so that Chris would have that freedom to make the choice weither to serve or not.

As a young man a few years ago I ran into this same problem, an older VETERAN made reference to me as a Pu**y for not joining. I did not handle it was well Midas. Once I "calmly" explained my situation. The guy laid off and saw the error of his ways. It's bad cause I work with the joker. But for some reason he doesn't talk to me anymore.

So, the lesson he was teaching is that 1."the farm" was more important than his country, and 2. he just couldn't take the time to serve his country.
I wonder, how many years did he "have to work on the farm"?
