Deer hunting time again

All year long I look forward to the next deer season, and it's that time again here in Missouri. Last weekend I hunted with my two son's in law and one of their brothers in the extreme NW corner of Missour, in Atchinson County. Hamburg, Iowa is about 20 miles north where we usually have our deer processed.
I sighted 10 deer last Saturday but for various reasons none was one I wanted to shoot. Here, a buck must have 4 points on one side, or more, to be legal game. I saw two or three young bucks with two points on each side as they chased yearling does across the creekbed close to my deer stand. Other does I saw were for various reason were unacceptable shots.
However, one of my SIL's was successful getting a 10 point, 151 lb (field dressed weight) buck. That became a challange for all of to find since it ran about 150 yards in heavy brush and weeds along a hillside. Finally it was spotted almost at the ridge of the hill as it finally was too drained of blood, etc. to run farther. My SIL is going to mount it's antlers and skull.
So...it's back to the same hunting area again starting early tomorrow morning. Wish me luck!

For me hunting is all about the fun of preparing for the hunt, stalking game and the enjoyment of doing this with my friends and family who enjoy hunting, too.
Since I still have venison in my fridge from last season, if I should get a deer tomorrow I'll probably donate it to an acquaintance I know who depends upon venison only for his family's meat all year.Posted 11-17-2007 at 01:36 PM by Oxford

Ox, I wish you the best of luck. I think I am gonna head out to the woods in the morning, I didn't have any success today. But anymore, I don't really care about killing a big ole' deer, I just enjoy the experience of being outside, having good times with friends and family. A nice big buck wouldn't hurt, though

My SIL's and I went back to the same hunting area today in NW MO. However, I only spotted one young buck with two points on each side just as I had settled in on top of my tree stand at 6:40 a.m. Couldn't shoot that deer because it wasnt legal. So...we all kept looking for more deer till around 1 p.m. when we called it quits for the day...and for me, quits for one more deer season. It's been a lot of fun the past two weekends. Glad one of my SIL's got his 10 pt buck, and I've enjoyed all the scenario of the deer hunt again this year.Posted 11-18-2007 at 08:25 PM by Oxford
