Deer draw results in early, exercise, deer guns

Posted 06-21-2011 at 01:34 PM by bobvonb

A little more G&G related today. The Deer draw came in a day or two early. I got my D14 and a Preference point for X9A in the Eastern Sierra. That's 3 pref points. When we (son-in-law and his buddies) get 7 or more points we may go in as a group and try to pull that zone.

What a beautiful area to hunt that will be!

Meanwhile I got my D14 for the San Bernardino mountains, which...

Deer draw, Warming up, on California Bashing

Posted 06-20-2011 at 06:14 PM by bobvonb

Prologue: on the 23rd I'll get this year's results of the deer draw. I put in for X9A, a premium hunt in the Eastern Sierra, expecting to not get it and accumulate the Preference Points so a group of us can go a few years down the road. My second choice is D14, the San Bernardino mountains only an hour from my desert home. That is pretty much a guaranteed draw, they usually don't sell out. It's not a lead-free bullet area but I use them anyway, they shoot best in my gun.

I'm full...

Day 7: did the 5 mile loop again, a little easier each day although I'm sweating like the proverbial pig now. And it feels good!

It was just last Sunday we kicked off the season with the 5 mile walk in the mountains. I feel pretty good about my progress in one week.

Didn't get out on the bike yesterday, I spent the day getting the pool back in swim-able shape. Our pool guy quit the business and it was getting an awful greenish-yellow tinge to it. I had to learn how to...

John Tesh PBS special taping

Day 6: John Tesh PBS taping

Prologue: getting in shape. The grandkids are out of school now and I have the babysitting duties so I can't do my morning bike ride. Maybe tonight. Or maybe I'll dust off those 2 lb. hand weights in the corner and do some 'strength training'. Lord knows I can't even open a pickle jar without a 3 lb. persuader any more.

So on to today's topic. A few months ago my wife won John Tesh concert tickets on a radio call in. The show was in a wonderful...

Day 5: city boy wants to go hunting, how to

Posted 06-16-2011 at 11:45 AM by bobvonb
Updated 06-16-2011 at 12:04 PM by bobvonb

Prologue: 5 mi again on the bike, slight improvement, didn't have to go to lowest gear for finishing climb.

Per request:

Today I'm going to talk about how a city boy becomes a hunter. I should know because that's how it went for me. So this is for anyone who wants to hunt, but doesn't know where to start.

A little background and then I'll get into specific topics. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb if ever there was one. I never went to camp....
