Gun Snobs - Ruining it for everone else.

Posted 11-22-2007 at 12:44 PM by SPOCAHP ANAR
While never having been exposed to this type of behavior at the range or in the gun store, I have been exposed to it numerous times here on G&G and on the internet gun forums.

Why do people buy what they buy? Some buy only the best money can buy. Others buy what their buddies have. Some buy for economy. Some buy because of the recommendation from other shooters regardless of the validity of the advice given.

So here are some guidelines we should follow when giving advice:

1) If they don't ask for your opinion then it probably won't be recieved well when you give it.

2) If you have experience with a particular firearm, either good or bad, then feel free to comment on what you know from experience.

3) If you have only read about particular problems with a certain firearm or firearm types then you have no real first hand experience about them and should not pass off what you have read as gospel truth.

4) ALL GUN MANUFACTURERS HAVE PROBLEMS! Failure in quality control can occur in any weapon in any company in any price range. I have read articles and complaints about a variety of manufacturers from HiPoints to Kimber.

5) The advice you are giving is your OPINION. It is not backed up by statistical data, spreadsheets or scientific data.

Simply put, no gun owner should be ridiculed or derided for their chioce of firearm. They may be starting a family and not have the money to buy a Kimber so they settle on a Jennings just so they can hang out with their more established friends at the range. Isn't that what its all about anyway? Comraderie amongst men, and women, who have a like minded interest to share and learn from each other.

Make a beginner feel stupid or cheap for their choice of firearm and it may end up in the back of the closet, or worse, at a pawn shop while he/she pursues another hobby.

So next time someone asks about a gun, think about what you say and how you say it. Better yet, why don't you encourage them to shoot a multitude of different firearms before they purchase one. Better yet, take them shooting and let them try yours out. You may end up not having to say anything at all!

if nothing else deriding someone's choices will only make them hate you and any good advice you may have.

Excellent S A. good guide lines. I think that is why this site is as popular as it is. I have looked at and joined other gun forums in the past, and in many cases have never felt comfortable or even welcome and I have been shooting for 50 yrs.... I just shrug that stuff off, but the new or young to this hobby could easily be driven off..

I attempt to give the best advice I can about the firearms I know of first hand, about those I don't I usually say nothing except maybe that I prefer one type/ action over another.

I agree with every word you said SA, on another forum I am involved with, there is a gentleman who posts pics every month of a Cooper or a Kimber rifle that he had bought just a few days earlier. It's hard to keep from saying something stupid every time he posts those pictures, he thinks that he is better than everyone else, and that his opinion is the only one that matters, because he can drop 2 grand on a new shooting iron. In reality, I can do everything that he can, with my $500 or $600 set up, and still be happy at the end of the day. I don't need a status symbol to stalk an animal through the woods.

Well, I was told by FoggyNoose in the Citizen's Arrest thread (post 17) that "...you contribute to the mentality we need to be getting rid of" because I did not agree that it is my duty to make a citizen's arrest. I have not posted on any thread since, nor will I. Friendliest Gun Forum? I am not so sure. Triggerjerk

it gets bad with the AK threads also.
no matter what you say someone will tell you to buy some ....$1000 gun ..and they always end with "and dont look back"
some folks just want something that goes BANG.
they arent interested in surviving the apocalypse.
or going to war in the middle of the U.S.
