Political meanness!

Posted 09-04-2008 at 11:07 PM by toolman
OK, I know this is a slippery slope,
a lot has changed in the last few years and we now have access to more info than ever before, but we're also constantly bombarded with pure KRAP! We all have our own opinions and ideas but where do we draw the line between right and wrong?
Our recent discussions here on G&G have caused me to ponder where our sense of decency has gone, some in our midst have no qualms about publicly trashing people not directly involved in an election if it helps them make their point. I think this is a sign of petty, immature, spitefulness with a large dose of "kick the crippled dog" meanness thrown in to boot.
My question is this: Why are so many people so vindictive against someone who's never done a damm thing to them? If you're watching the current election, I'd appreciate it if someone could explain to me how anyone in good conscience could trash a 17 yr-old girl trying to deal with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy just because her mom got nominated for office?
I think that a large portion of our society has lost its' sense of decency and honor, but apparently I'm a minority.

There's so many people who feel they have the right to say anything they want even trashing a 17 yr-old.I say leave the CHILD alone, she's got alot to deal with as it is.But people can be sooooo damn hateful without stopping to think of the damage they cause. They act like she's the only pregnant 17 yr-old in the USA that's not married.I get real sick of mud throwing around election time.Tollman your not the only one who feels this way.

To me, thats the worst part about politics. Many times, all you hear from a candidate is how crappy their opponent is and nothing about what they themselves actually stand for.

Once here in Arkansas, a lady ran for governer and not in one single ad (that I saw) did she say what she stood for, only how evil and crappy the other guy was.

Just a few months ago I remember people trashing Britney Spears' little sister for being 17 and pregnant. There was not one positive or neutral comment on that thread. In my opinion, stuff happens. Teenagers get pregnant. It's a shame and I wish they would be more responsible, but it happens. I don't condone teenage pregnancy, but I'm also not gonna trash a 17 year old pregnant girl.

The two things you don't talk about to avoid conflict:
    1. Politics
    B. Religion

People are passionate about their beliefs in both. Passionate to the point of hatred for "opposing" beliefs.

I'm Republican. And I was raised a Methodist. I married a Democratic Southern Baptist. Me and my wife are now Presbyterian and listen to partisan arguments.

That said, we hate each other from December to March. She's a "cheese and whine" Tarheel fan. I shoulda married another Duke fan.

I agree Seven. Sometimes at work people try to pull me into a discussion about politics and I do my best to stay out of it. Chances are, Im not gonna change their minds and they are not gonna change mine so whats the use?
