Bow Help

My brotherinlaw gave me a Bear Whitetail II Compound bow.I has a sticker on the front of the bottem limb that it has a 30 inch draw length a 60 pound draw weight and could some body tell me what this meens AMO COMPOUND STRING LENGTH 38 Dose that meen that the total string length is 38 inches? It looks like its in good shape no cracks in the limbs the string looks ok . Is this a good bow? It sais it was made in 1986 the serial number is 286579. I took 4-H bow class so I do now some about recurve bows. But dose a compound need to be unstrung when not in use? All comments welcome
