| bow setup
I've been a dedicated bow hunter for about 20 years and I've spent a fortune on all kinds of gear. I think I finally have a setup Im really comfortable with: 1. Bow-Hoyt 2. Stabilizer- a compact one 3. bow quiver- alpine 4. arrows- gold tip with feathers 5. knocks- luminock 6. broadheads-magnus or muzzy 7. release- what ever is comfortable 8. sight- single pin (lots of good choices) 9. bow case- plamo 1101 I could spend hours telling you stories about gear that failed trial and error, what works, kills quick, etc. what you see above is what I have come up with that I can be in the middle of nowhere and not be worried about a breakdown. good luck, email me if you want details. |

I have a Fed Bear bow. Like yours, it is about six to eight years old. I shoot carbon arrows, mechanical broadheads, and it has a smaller stabilizer. It is a good bow to hunt, and it is small. It is great in a tree, but a longer stabilizer makes it a much better bow to shoot. When I bought it I assume that technology could not get much better. I was wrong.

which one. I got an 07 reflex grizzly set at 72#'s. radial xweavw carbons, 125 3 1/2" mechanical terminator heads.... then I have a reflex extreme at 68#s but use old aluminum arrows my uncle had from the early 80's(long tac drivers)- pse nova set at 62#s and 1 fred bear whitetail hunter and 1 blacktail hunter. i use both of these for bowfishing. in my field i am pretty good out to 55 yards with 2 reflex bows! but in the stand Ill go 30-35 yards max. maybe on a moose ill go 50 but thats a bigger target i hear! (from New orleans, La. never even seen an Elk live except at the zoo!)

My answer would be as much as he can comfortably. I would say 45 lbs is about the minimum. When I was 12, I pulled 50. With newer bows, they make it easy.

Martin Sabre 55 lbs-70 lbs Currently set at 62 lbs, use a Whisker Biscuit Rest, Toxonic Sight, TRU-Nok, and a Tru Ball Copperhead Release. For arrows I use Easton Aluminum 2116 I think and Wasp 100 grain 4 blade broadheads. I have bowhunted for about 7 years for deer and turkey, this year will put my name in for the archery elk season. I also have a Martin Cougar (my old bow) for a spare, its a heck of a lot heavier. |

Mathews Switchback 57 lbs Easton Carbonaeros 7.1 grains per inch Very good arrow for the price. Muzzy broadheads Quicky quiver Love this inexpensive quiver It has that red rubber that seems to last forever Scott / Saber Tooth release This is the only pricey add on I've got. $15 sights Upgrading a little a time but these sights are pretty good. Sold at Walmart. Had the bow for about three years and they've never slipped! 1" inch doinker Sling / braided nylon Whisker Biscuit Quote:
Lefty, These new bows don't kill them any deader than the old ones but if you would ever shoot one you would fall in love again with the sport. When you release the arrow there is almost no shock at all and they're fast. I made the mistake of shooting a friends Mathews and felt practically nothing when released. I bought one about a week later! To compare it with guns would be like shooting a 410 then shooting a 22. Last edited by Sooner Shooter; 02-29-2008 at 10:19 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Holy moly man. What a difference a couple years make. Another mistake made on my part- shoulda never shot it! but seriously, so light, so quiet, no shock and soo easy to pull back. just kinda makes me mad tho, i cannot buy another one! my wife would shoot me in my sleep!

I'm a hardcore bear, jennings, buckmaster, ect. bow man.but last year i went to buy a new bear bow & the dealer talked me in to shooting a tomcat.WOW i could'nt belive how well it proformed compared 2 the bear bows that were around the same price. needless 2 say i bought the tomcat, took the rubber grip off,the package sights, quiver & rest then added a wooden bowtec grip, trophy taker drop away rest, quikee quiver, and dont laugh their my alltime favorite ,fineline crosshair sights. toped off with some easton carbon arrows & set at 70lb i'm gettin around 285fps,with a 100gr. rocket ultimate steel broadhead belive me it packs a punch, the best set up i've ever hunted with in my 24yrs.of huntin. |
