I'm another advocate "of the mystical flight of the arrow" as ol' Nuge would say.

In process of getting a new bow...I use carbon arrows, Whisker Biscuit, 100GR Muzzies, and shoot with a release.
I will shoot 40 yards if perfect shot opportunity...prefer it to be 30 or less.

My favorite bow I've ever shot was a Golden Eagle...laminated wood, 48" long, simple wheels. It's not the best for hunting, but it is accurate as heck with heavy aluminium arrows and 125GR Thunderheads. (it shoots better with broadheads then target points). I've had several modern bows since then, but I'll always keep my ol' Eagle around, it's what I learned archery on.

Yep I still have my first bow and its a PSE Spyder 50# and I just can't get rid of it, but my little brother is gunna start hunting so it won't be retired for 3 or 4 more years (It did have last year off though). Its been good to me for the 6 years I used it and I think he can take one with it.

Horton crossbow - now don't go crazy telling me its not a bow, I've heard it all. I like 30 yrd no more than 40 yrds. Before that a Bear Kodiack magnum and before that a browning viper with rose wood inlay. Recurve's are where it's at I am goint to try and see if I can effectively pull the Bear this weekend. I am definately in better physical condition than last year.

See, personally i don't care for crossbows, but if your in the woods hunting with it then i'm glad to see your post. (just because i don't care for crossbows doesn't mean i don't want you to post, if it shoots arrows join in on this thread, i want to know what you got) The only way i would use one is when i can't pull a bow back anymore, (it'll happen some day, hopefully a long long time from now lol) because when i get to that point i still want to hunt because i do love deer jerky lol.

I still shoot my old PSE Nova @60#, xx75 arrows, 125grThunderheads, limbsavers, bodoodle rest, 4 pin fibreoptic Alpine sight, Scott release. I'm good out to 40yds on deer. I will shoot 3D out to 60-70.
My son (14) shoots a Golden Eagle, #39 with BPS Carbon arrows, 125 T-Heads, whisker bisquit, TruGlo sight, and Cobra release. He's good to about 25-30.

hoyt ultramag,tru-glow illuminated sites,octane rest,nap shock-blocker stabilizer,and gold tip hunter expedition 5575 arrows that were on sale at bass pro shop.my release is from a wal-mart clearance many years ago,and i don't remember who made the string-stopper.this year i will try vortex 125 gr mechanicals.40 yards is the max i will shoot at deer.
i really like the octane rest,but the brush life is limited if you shoot alot.$10 replacements brushes seems expensive.

70# bowtech tomkat. Slick Trick 125g broadheads. I'll shoot game out to 40 yards. Most of my kills are inside of 20 though.

I shoot a Tomkat as well. Really good bow for the money, just bought it used, its an 2008 model. I have been shooting bows for about 10 years, and think that anyone who shoots deer at over 50 yards is questionable. Hopefully these are just internet stories. I shoot paper out to 60, because it makes me deadlier at 40, but would never dream of trying to kill a deer at 60.

Alright more Bowtech guys, i like what i'm hearin still, a lot of good set ups! for mine i just switched from a biscuit to the Octane Hostage Pro rest and love it so far mainly because it picked up speed

but lets keep those bow set ups rollin in.

Mathews Q2, trophy taker drop away, cobra sight, doinker stabilizer, gold tip pro hunter arrows and rocky ultimate steel broad heads... most shots inside 30 yards but comfortable shooting to 50 yards if conditions permit it... target practice we will routinely shoot all the way to 100 yards and keep MOST shots inside a paper plate....

WOW 100 yards is far even if it is on targets only, I'm guessin you do 3D tournaments? If not you got more than enough to win, thats all i can say to that. I never even thought of target shooting at 100 yds, I've considered 75 TOPS. MOST in a paper plate at that range is still pretty mind blowing.

We shoot 5 times a week year round, it took along time to get to the 100 yard mark...
I must say again, "MOST" of the arrows are in the paper plate at that distance.. I probably lost 4 dozen arrows before I routinely hit the hay bale alone.. now I only lose 1 every now and again.. I only feel comfortable shooting at game inside 40 yards though..
Past the 40 yard mark to many things can go wrong..

mathews dxt, rip cord rest, copper john 4 pin, tru ball sniper2 release, easton axis n fused arrows with muzzy 100gr 4 blade broadheads. 40 yd shots are a slam dunk, and under the right conditions i would take a 50yd shot on game.

just got my swat yesterday,fine-line crosshair sights,s-coil,pronghorn rest,flatline doa 340s 100gr. tips 377 gr. @ 30" 315 fps.

I have a used Hoyt, shoot GoldTip carbons and 100gr ThunderHeads. My pins are set at 25, 35, and 45yds. I have taken 1 buck at 55 yds and 1 at 45 yds but everything else over the years has been under 30yds.

I still shoot my 70# Hoyt Raptor with lots of goodies. It has taken several animals, from bear and deer, to bunny and bird. I love gun hunting and shooting, but it is impossible to top the excitement of a bowhunt.

I shot one buck at 57 yards, but otherwise I don't consider sending an arrow down range at a critter over 35.

BTW, AMAZING buck!

Just picked up a Bear Whitetail Hunter and a Bear Black Mag, at a garage sale, yeah I know not the best, but for $20 for the pair I figured they'd make good starter bows.

That's a great deal, no matter how old the equipment is you will still enjoy the sport of archery and more time in the woods. If it is not your cup of tea then give them to a youngster so he or she can be introduced to Archery...
