| Opinions on the Safari?
Just wondering if anyone here has any opinions on the BAR Safari? BAR Safari, , Browning Firearms Product I am considering this as my next purchase. I'd like to get the 7mm Rem Mag BOSS, but the clossest I can find locally is the 300 Win Mag BOSS. |

Congratulations! You are choosing the best semi auto sporting firearm available in magnum calibers. I own one in 270 and can attest that they are well made and very accurate. My only negative would be to forget about the muzzle brake. With the BAR you will not need the recoil reduction and it will make the rifle louder than a middle aged housewife after a long winter. JMHO, on the need for recoil reduction. Proven fact on the rest.

| Any Browning BAR is a good rifle; Safari or otherwise. Just remember that it is a semi-auto and needs the same extra care any semi-auto would need. Just curious; what will you be hunting? 7mm Remington Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum appear to be on the extreme end as far as deer hunting, though they are certainly within the deer hunting calibers. If you will be hunting deer or other big hoofed animals, would you rule out .30-06 Springfield or .270 Winchester? If you plan on bear hunting too, then .300 WM, or even .338 WM would be my choice. | High quality and a long history
market success for the Browning design. One drawback to the BOSS. Many shooters do not choose this option as it produces an extremely loud muzzle blast. In larger calibers this often drives shooters to earplugs plus the headset ear protection. So, if I had ten thumbs it would be ten thumbs up for the Browning. But do some research on the BOSS and talk to some owners before choosing this option. I do not know if it is still available but at one time there was a sleeve type device by Browning to cover the BOSS thus eliminating the sound problem. |

| RE: questions.
Good to know about BOSS being louder. I have not heard that about BOSS before. I have not ruled out anything yet. Reasoning for 7mm Rem Mag preference is that from what I've read that cartrige has less kick than most others in that size range, has a very flat trajectory, and doesn't get nailed by wind as much. Also, it's the 24" barrel length that has me stoked. My understanding of precision is that a longer barrel = better, straighter, truer shots. Not sure if 2" difference makes much difference. As far as what I'd hunt? For the imediate future, probably paper and other inanimate objects. Most big game in these parts has to be "drawn" for so you have to be lucky, just to be able to hunt it. However when/if I were to ever get to hunt with it, I'd like to have something that would be versitile, and have plenty of stopping power. Also as a science/engineering geek, I have always admired sharpshooting. It's also an item I'd consider something to hand down, which is why I am 99% sure on going Browning, they seem to be hands down great craftsmanship. I have not ruled out A-bolts either. |

| The 7mm Remington Mag
is very well established in the marketplace and has a track record of hunting succes throughout North America. Those of us who witnessed the introduction of the 7mm Remington Mag can recall endless ads stating "magnum performance with .30-06 recoil" although this is not exactly true if you want to get down to specifics. Longer barrels do not automatically equate to greater accuracy. Firing a bullet sets up barrel harmonics (movement). Manufacturers have done a great deal of research in terms of barrel length, barrel diameter, twist rate of riflings, and so on thus you get a barrel well suited for the caliber in question. Browning also makes excellent bolt action rifles. You would not be disappointed with one of their bolt action rifles in the hunting field. If you want to take "geekdom" to the next level it is possible to buy an action then work with with one of the barrel makers out there to have a custom barrel mated to the action. Of course, this can really run up the price of the finished gun and you may not be pleased with any actual improvement in hunting field performance over the factory Browning. Another higher price option would be to buy from Weatherby. Their website features a custom shop area where you can get barrels in about five different contours. Realistically, if you want to hunt Browning already has a great product in either the semi-auto or the bolt action design. Just get a quality scope and do the important thing - practice to get good with it. |

i love the bar, but as pervousily stated i would forget about the boss, had a buddy that had one i did not like it he did not like it, not only does it make it louder but if you decide to change bullets the boss must be readjusted each time, just one more step and an unessary one to me. on the 7mm rem mag it is my favorite of the 3 rifle i own, it is a browning a bolt, i live in mississippi so i only shot it at deer, also i do not consider extrem or overkill as some might say, .308 i have in the bar doesnt see much action anymore due to the 7mm mag and the 06 i have. but to answer your question yes browning bar by far the best semi i have ever laid eyes on you will not regreat the descion to get one. |

Yup, I have been watching over there, and I finally put my order in for an x-bolt instead of the BAR. Simplicity and accuracy are more important to me than the semi-auto. Hope to see it by the middle to end of next week. | |
