I may have to stay in california for a short period of time regrettably. My question is while im staying with the inlaws what should I do with my firearms. If i cant legally take them/store them in california.

What do you have, you can most likely take it with you....

There is very little that is truly illegal here. If you have ARs, make sure they're not on the list. Attach a bullet button/other mag lock, or sell the lower and keep everything else if it's on the list. AKs, you can just sell or trade them out of state for something that isn't on the list etc. Just make sure you do mag locks or monsterman grips. Make sure that you disassemble your standard cap mags. Unless it's an AW such as a Taurus judge etc... if it's an AW, it has to stay out of the state.

What's the deal with disassembling the high cap mags? If they are disassembled they are not illegal? Can they be put back together at some point?

OT, they are considered "rebuild kits" and therefore are legal according to the letter of the law. Technically possessing standard capacity mags is not illegal, however "manufacturing" (putting a rebuild kit together to form a new mag that you didnt' have in cali prior to 2000) is illegal, as is "importing", unless you run an Armored Car service and are licensed as such with the state.

Another thing to remember is that the manufacture, importing, and selling is what is illegal, not possession per say. So since you are moving here, legally you would be " importing" your high caps, if they are dissasembaled when you come, and stay that way why you are here no law is being broken. If you lived here before the ban it is perfectlly legal to own and use high cap mags as long as you possesed them before 2000.
