Not holding my breath

Currently our State officals are debateing (and they are the Master debators) weather Kansas will have a CCW law. This bill was vetoed in 2004 by the Gov. Also similer to the bill vetoed by then Gov. Bill Graves.
Currently has passed the Senate by 1 vote to prevent a veto by the Govenor. Anyway I am not holding my breath as to weather it will pass here, but I am keeping my fingers crossed. As well as watching to see if the officals I voted for vote for this bill. I might have something to say come the next election.

A bill that would allow Kansans to carry concealed handguns won a key endorsement Tuesday in the Senate. But detractors remain vocal.

As the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee on Tuesday advanced the measure to the full Senate with only minor changes, Sen. Roger Reitz, R-Manhattan, asked how private property owners -- such as churches -- were supposed to notify people that concealed weapons weren't allowed.

Sen. Phil Journey, R-Haysville, the chief sponsor of the bill, said property owners would have to post a sign "conspicuously."

Reitz, a critic of the bill, said that "blows my mind. I have a hard time with that."

"The concept of a sign being posted in the narthex of my church is just ludicrous," he said.

The bill would make it a misdemeanor should someone carry a concealed weapon onto private property where concealed guns have been prohibited.

The provision allowing businesses to forbid guns on their property is one of many safeguards implanted in the bill that is expected to pass easily in both the Senate and House. It is similar to a bill passed two years ago that was vetoed by Democratic Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

The governor is expected to veto this bill as well, and it is unclear whether the measure has the two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override a veto.

The measure would allow Kansans older than 21 to obtain permits to carry concealed handguns. The attorney general's office would conduct background checks to eliminate anyone with a felony record, history of mental illness, physical infirmity, or drug or alcohol addiction.

Applicants would have to complete an eight-hour safety course, and guns wouldn't be permitted in a city hall, courthouse, jail, law enforcement office or state office building.

Kansas is one of four states without a general law allowing the carrying of concealed weapons.

Journey dismissed Reitz's reservations, saying they weren't a valid reason to vote against the bill. He said property owners should post signs if they don't want concealed weapons on their properties -- including churches.

"Individuals deserve notice before they can be prosecuted," Journey said. "It doesn't have to be a big placard at the door."

The concealed carry bill -- Senate Bill 418 -- is expected to be debated in the full Senate within the next two weeks.

The Senate voted 30-10 on Wednesday to send our Governor a measure similar to one she vetoed in 2004. The Senate vote was to accept House amendments and forward the measure to the governor. The House passed the bill Monday on a 90-33 vote and returned it to senators.
The Governor stated that she will more then likly veto the bill, at which piont it will go back to see if the House and Senate override the veto. Again I'm not holding my breath, but wondering just how many elected officals will go aginst their party and override?

There was a big brewhaha in Misssouri when our CCW went into effect. The bleeding heart liberals were doing their usual "It'll increase firearms violence" routine. Several businesses had put up signs stating "your right to carry ends here. Firearms are prohibited." Well, the way I see it, if a person that is carrying a concealed firearm on their person, no one is goind to know anyway. Isn't that kinda the point???

Keep us updated Pball.

I would love to come across a business that would put up a sign like that, I would never spend another cent in there.

Blockbuster Video is on the very tip top of my Black List. A few years ago (prior to Missouri's CCW) I was working a special assignment for the Sheriff's Dept. and was in plain clothes. On the way home, I had stopped at Blockbuster to rent a couple of movies. Having worn duty weapon for the last 12 hours in a pancake holster covered by a light jacket, it had become a part of my body. I had knelt down to look at a movie and when I did, I guess the clerk saw my weapon, freaked out and called the local police. On my way out to my truck, I was met half way by two young local police officers. One told me to put the movies down slowly and then place my hands on top of my head. Not sure yet as to what the heck was going and not really wanting to get shot, I did what I was told. I told them that I was a Sheriff's deputy and my badge was next to my holster. I also told them that my credentials were in my wallet. Everything turned out okay, and they apologized several times. I told them they were just doing their jobs and not to worry about it. When I went back to return the movies a couple days later, I told the manager about what had happened and he stated the it was Blockbusters policy not to allow firearms in the their place of business, period. Off duty police officer or otherwise. I haven't been back since and that was 5 years ago.

We got it! They over rid her veto. She tried to play it off, first veto over-ride of a govenor in some time here. She should be toast next election - but them pesky republicrats can't come up with a decent contender. Sen. Barnett isn't up to the job and other than him I know of no republicrat running or thinking of running.

Anywho, who gives a fat rats arss - we got CCW and it's about time.
