Training is essential, nuff said, but you must also have the right "mind set" to take another human life. Once that is established training and automatic response will take over. (fight or flight instincts)

As mentioned in another post here, the 21 foot distance( rule) is used to show how fast an assailent can get to you.
Someone standing around 21 feet away can run and jump on you before you can draw your weapon supposibly.
My son proved he could to me, so personaly I would use this distance as a minimum if faced with a conforntation.
Though we hope we never have to draw our firearms we have to be prepared for "if" we do.
I'm proud to say that our future LEO's receive excellent training in Arkansas at our Acadomy which my son attendended.
He showed me a lot of things he learned when he came home on the week ends.

Learn your kill zone with 21ft. being the minimum and have your gun out and ready to fire.
BUT before your assailent enters your kill zone you need to startle them with yelling and yes I said yelling GET ON THE F_ _KING GROUND NOW !!! of course if there weilding a gun you hope you take them out first.

Overheard at the range

7 yards, 7 feet. Doesn't matter. If you percieve the threat is there protect yourself. Just be able to articulate it later.

Also, Jennifer Aniston would feel more threatened by a knofe than Hulk Hogan

Considering that an assailant can shoot further than 7 yds., the guy was just silly.

In Tennessee, the rule is that a reasonable person would be in fear of his life or sever injury.

overheard at the range

Not really a good idea for a new students advice. Gives them the wrong parameters rather than dealing with threat levels and responses. Good practice range though

defensive shooting

The most important thing about having to shoot someone is not figured out or measured in distance. If you shoot it's suppose to be an auto response due to emminant threat of death or injury. Its not like if you are in a situation that requires you to shoot;that you'll be thinking of distance ,it should be automatic and the only way to make things better is to practise different scenerios in defensive situations.

The point our instructor made was at 21 feet unless you have your weapon drawn and pointing, the attacter can reach you before you draw. Thus the 21 feet min. is the closest to allow anyone to approach if you are not sure of their intentions.
