if you like a med. size compact in the .45 OR 9mm might try looking at the Witness line. +1 for bersa's as well
So far my wife has put 500 + rounds through her Bersa Thunder .380 w/o any real problems. A few hangups I think due to ammo, but so far it has acted like a champ.
I have a Witness poly .45. 300+ rounds and no hang-ups at all. only thing I have put through it so far is 230 FMJ's though.

I'd go with snubbie in 38,357 or 44. Smith, Taurus or Charter Arms and be picky about the ammo. Shoot only what you can hit with that gives good expansion....which is hard to find for a snubby. I like a snub nosed charter in 44 with a big ol semi wadcutter..In mine my first round is a snake shot since I work in the woods since I retired..but I'd definitely go with the revolver especially if you get grit etc in your pocket with the gun like I do...

Carry what you feel comfortable with. Any of the major companies make full size down to sub-compacts. Personally I like Glocks, they shoot right out of the box. Sigs, colts (& Clones), S&W from my exoerience need a break in period, but that was when pistols were made with recycled beer cans, now the recycled coke bottle may be a different story. I need to trade in my 26 for a m-19 size pistol(my old eyes don't focus well any more) I want to try a Springfield XD before I get a M-19. The XD feels good in the hand and I like the grip safety, but I have a m-17 that I bought in '87 Its been overhauled for PM a few times in it's 100,000 + rounds history and it's never failed om me yet

I myself carry the Springfield XD .40 S&W service model...i do recommend .40 or .45 cal...no lack in stopping power...unlike 9mm
