Packing in public: Gun owners tired of hiding their weapons embrace 'open carry'

The latest version in CCW, open carry...

Packing in public: Gun owners tired of hiding their weapons embrace 'open carry' - Los Angeles Times

Reminds me of when I was younger, before all the CCW beurocrocy, when I carried my SBH open carry too...

Police acknowledge the practice is legal, but some say it makes their lives tougher.

Police Chief John Greiner recalled that last year in Ogden, Utah, a man was openly carrying a shotgun on the street. When officers pulled up to ask him about the gun, he started firing. Police killed the man.
This has absolutely nothing to do with carrying open or concealed, this is entirely about a man with a shotgun looking for suicide by cop, or was stopped before he carried out an even more heinous crime.

That police chief is an idiot !

Here in Sunny Florida, we were given the choice awhile back - open carry OR CCW, NOT both - the voters chose CCW. We cannot carry openly.

I have been on OCDO and been part of the WA open carry movement for a while now. I'm an active member over on the forums and an active member in my local and state education/legislation.

I post on the OCDO (opencarry.org) forums under the same name.

JAC,
Thanks for additional info on open carry...
OpenCarry.org

Here in Idaho, we still enjoy the 2nd Amendment to its fullest, we're a "Gold Star" open carry state.

I have a CCW but don't mind carrying open, in summer here we don't wear enough clothes to conceal..so I strap my .25 beretta in its little holster and have it on my waistband.
Packing the .40 into my holster and wearing it with my shorts..just doesn't seem right.

FL and TX both don't allow Open Carry (wish they did). I prefer CC personally; however, I think open carry is great as well if you're so inclined.

It'd make things easier in the summer here for sure !

Plus, you get to show the general public that, "yes, good guys carry guns, too."; not just the cops and bad guys.

I've got to answer lots of firearms-related questions from those that aren't familiar with firearms or the laws regarding them. You get to be a voice for pro-gun when you OC.

Don't be ashamed of your gun, wear it openly with pride! (within the law, of course)

Back in the 80's I went to Cody Wy. for a vacation and what a shock for a Minn. boy people were walking around town with guns on the hip and even the store dummies in the window had real guns in the display. I hope its still like that I want to go back and find out and maybe move there some day.

this post is hypothetical, I wouldn't carry without being 21

I'd like to have to option to OC, but I wouldn't excercise it much, if ever, it just puts a big red bullseye on your chest if someone starts shooting, and with the way some people's kids are i'd have kids reaching at it "mommy what's this?". it would be nice to not have to worry about if it prints or OC in the woods though, which is why i'd want the option

We have open carry in Arizona, occassionally I'll see someone excersize the right while walking around downtown, but I've never felt the need. My son-in-law couldn't wait to carry his Glock everywhere we went when visiting recently, and I thought he looked like a jerk. Get a CCW and at least partially hide it, unconcealed carry just looks out of place and weird, and could even be an invitation to trouble.

I carry my Glock everywhere I go, OC'ing when I can.

But you're more than welcome to be ashamed of your second amendment rights.

Personally, I'd rather a BG look at me, decide to find an easier target and walk away.

There's a reason criminals are criminals... they're opportunists. They want to find the easiest prey and take advantage of them. If they know you're armed and will likely fight back, they'll move to easier "prey."

There's no evidence that CC has prevented crime over OC; the opposite is not true. I have heard stories of "thugish, gangsta" types walking into a 7-11, seeing an OC'er at the register buying some soda, eyes going wide and scurrying out as quickly as they could.

To also cut off another argument against OC; there is no evidence that OC'er have their guns taken from them by BG's. There are incidents of gun-grabs, but they're from LEO's that have to get in close and go hands-on with BG's. We citizens can keep our distance and most OC'ers are smart enough to use a level-2 or higher holster (Serpa myself) to increase retention.

Someone ought to make up T-shirts for each state..."Good Guys carry guns too!" and put the applicable state law under it.

I would like to have an option to open carry a medium frame semi auto.
But in a way I have to agree with Taurus Fan too.
It does seem out of place to open carry. But if more people did it, I would be more comfortable doing it...A.H
