You nailed the problem, but don't lump the rest of us into that sewerhole.. | |

We have a lot farther than you think. You forget we live in the most corrupt state in the union. We have been on national TV showing how our elections are rigged. Politicians standing outside the poles paying $10 to $15 dollars for votes.
Hell they bus the poor and indigent to the poles for money.
We have a motto here in Il. " Vote early, and vote often"
People get to vote here long after their dead. REALLY, no kidding.
Have you heard about of gov. Blagovich??????
Our democrat politicians are the ones that don't want us to have guns.
Sorry for the Obama thing, Please don't blame us. I just the rest of the country knew what we know about him, but I blame the media for that. They didn't tell the truth.

Another non-resident with plans to visit your state. I have a son that lives in Lisle. My concealed carry license is good until I cross the Illinois line. At that point, I plan on removing the mag & putting it in my bag. I'll use a trigger lock & store the firearm elsewhere in the car. Will that make me legal while traveling through your state?

The gun has to be in a case, un-loaded. clip can be loaded and in the case along side the gun

I am not sure if the handgun ban is just Chicago proper or includes all of Cook County. Some years back I read an article about how many handguns were confiscated each year by traffic stops alone and many of them were out of staters passing thru with no idea of what laws or bans are in place in each little burg or county they may be in.
For the rest of the state you are safe as per Triggers info. Now that I think about it Madison county (in the east st.louis area) might have a ban as well.
Myself I stay out of the chicago area as much as possible.

Let's just hope the NRA suit against Chicago succeeds in striking down their gun ban. I'm sure that Daley and his minions will pull the same sort of crap that DC is pulling about concealed carry outside the home, but since DC's mayor and its City Council are about to get their collective butts in a crack over their playing fast and loose with gun rights in DC following Heller, that nonsense may be kept to a minimum. That would go a long way toward forcing Chicago to play in the real world.
I am more and more convinced we need a version of the Thune Amendment, a National Pistol Permit Reciprocity law, on the books. But I think the only way we'll get it is if, as with driver's licenses, the states with higher standards persuade the states where it's easier to raise their bars some. I think requiring a photo permit format like the driver's licenses, fingerprints be taken, background checks run and applicants passing the NRA Basic Pistol course is about right for the initial license. Then just paying a fee for renewal (if required - in my county and most of the upstate New York counties a pistol permit is good for life) every 5 years instead of going through the whole thing again, just as with a driver's license renewal, would mollify the states like New York and New Jersey with high bars to clear. As most of the states that issue CCWs have most of these standards in place already, it shouldn't be too hard to persuade them to add whatever might be missing - mostly the photo and the background check, I suspect.
Then we wouldn't have to deal with the exact situation Article IV, Section 1 of the Constitution was written to prevent, as we must at the present time regarding pistol permits. If we could get it done before the 2010 election, that would be great.

tim | Once I reach that area, the gun will a in my son's residence. I do not intend keeping it in the vehicle while we are in the area. Actually. it should not be an issue since we don't plan on giving the police any reason to stop us.
No offense, but if my son didn't live there, I would be avoiding the whole state.

Trigger beat me to it but I seem to recall that if a gun is legal where you are from and legal where you are going there is a federal law that says you can't be arrested for transporting no matter what the local laws say. Besides, if you case the gun like Trigger said and say nothing about a gun in the car if your get stopped for speeding, they have no probable cause to search the car. In Illinois probable cause is required to search unless you give permission. Can PC be ginned up? Sure but, any decent lawyer will get it pitched out of court. My nephew is a State Trooper and we've had this discussion. One other thing, the cased gun is not supposed to be in the passenger compartment of the car. Put it in the trunk or back of the SUV or van under some stuff. As long as it isn't easily accessible you're OK.

Thanks for all the info. I don't foresee any problem. Just in case, the weapon I'll have with me is the one that is the least fun to shoot. So, if something does happen & it is confiscated, it'll just give me a good excuse to get a better one when I get back home.
