This thread spouts alot of rhetoric about who should be blamed for this incident but not one response places the true blame on the right person.
Was the club responsible for the kid's death? Not really. They were instumental in the tragedy.
Was the sheriff responsible for the kid's death? Indirectly by giving permission to the gun owner to bring the Uzi to the shoot.
Regardless, the person directly responsible for the kid's death was the kid's father. He took the kid to the shoot and failed to properly supervise the boy. He allowed the 8 years old to handle a fully-loaded, round-in-chamber full automatic weapon while the father retrieved his camera to take that cute picture of his son. Only an idiot would do something of that nature. The boy's father should be charged as everyone else involved. A parent should never imperil his child with a loaded deadly weapon and then leave the child's side...in most circles this would be considered child endangerment.
I trained both of my children to shoot, and children of others, but I was never more than arms length of them...ever.
My sympathy goes out to the boy's family...but Dad was mostly responsible.
