| At 1000 yards, I'd try the 6.5 Grendel. As for a facility, good luck... you may be better off with permission on private property.

If you dont know where the 1000yd ranges are,I take it you dont know too much about shooting 1000yds.Why dont you get into shorter range competition and work your way up.Even at 100yds,you are going to find the competition very agressive and strengent. That 6mm rem. will work to 1000yds.if it works at 100yds.That is where you find out if your rifle, you or both can compete. sam.

| a little weak
I dont know about where you can find 1000 yard ranges. I live in Arkansas and nobody wants to give up that much realestate to let a bunch of nuts throw lead accross it. The best plan for finding 1000 yards to shoot accross will be to make freinds with a farmer. As to your choice of rifle, I personally think the 6mm is a little weak. When shooting @ 1000 yards, even though your rifle can get the bullet to the target, the wind is going to play hell with that tiny bullet especially in Texas! I think you would do well to consider a rifle with a little more testosterone. my buddies and I shoot long distances and we have settled on the .300 win mag or the .300 Wetherby mag. One of the guys is realy fond of his .270 Weatherby Mag, "which by the way is bigger than your rifle" but he has trouble keeping up on windy days.

| Most Guns will DO!
When you sit down and look a the ballistics of most hunting and other wildcat cartridges all of them will make it out to 1000yards and better the thing is to Know you ballistics exactly and your conditions. I find this easy to do with a run of the mill Palm Pilot and a Animeter or wind gauge. You know those ones with the little fan in them. Ebay sells them for around 30.00 plus shipping and handling. With this you can type in any rifle and bullet comb and it will tell your hold in inches, mil, minutes or cliks. The best progam i found was Pocket Sharpshooters Friend. IT IS FREEEEEE. I didnt belive it my self then I decided to shoot a 600ml pop bottle at 300 yards, 600ml bottle=gopher or ground hog, and I hit it 2nd shot. Now I know that is not very far but I shot it with a .22 long rifle. If you dont belive me whatever I know I did it and the man next to me just shook his head. When it comes to hunting or knock down power lets put it this way, would you stand out there? I am not talking about a 22 of course but any thing from a 22-250 to a say 45-70 can make it to 1000yards as long as you know your ballistics, how to shoot, your gun, and there is no chance for a stray bullet. They all might not group the same, Im guessing that the 4570 would put 5 rounds in a truck at that distance but that is why you should research what loads are accurate what you can afford and for where you can shoot I think the private land is your best bet. P.S. Biesly matches, I think that is how you spell it, in England at 2000 yards is won with a .303 Lee Enfield that has a little less ballistics than a 30-06 and is 60 some years old. |

| 600 yard IBS shooter
Your 6mm will do fine out to 1000 yards what most people don't understand about long range is ballistic coefficient and 6mm bullets are great. And more and more people are using them in the 600 and 1000 yard shoots. Your 6mm is not under powered.people talk about 270 and 300 mag's but they dont know anything. So here you go 300 win mag bullet 168 Velocity 3100 FPS B.C .475 S.D .253 at 1000 yards 300 inches wind def with a 10 mph cross drift 78 inches. 6 mm Bullet 117 ballistic coefficient .597 Velocity 2900 FPS at 1000 yards 312 inches of drop with 63 inches of drift in a 10 mph cross drift. |

| 1000yd range in Texas
If you are interested in 1000 yd shooting in Texas, I would recommend you subscribe to the Shooting Sports monthly from tyhe NRA. It lists matches nation wide by category and distance. That should give you a list in Texas. Second choice would be to check on local military bases with high power programs open to civilians. Good luck |

6.5-284 out of a 8 twist 30" long barrel is the current sweetheart of LR shooting. The 6XC is gaining some populatiry as well. 30" barrel (or sometimes longer) are pretty much standard on the 1000 yd line these days with fast twists to stablize the newer haevy high BC bullets. The important thing is to find where this is done near you and get involved. Everything comes easily after that. Check the below link, this forum is populated by only LR shooters, great folks and plenty of information to search. ***LONG-RANGE TARGET SHOOTING*** The definitive source for NRA and Fullbore Competition |

| 308 Win for long range There is a long range shooting competition referred to as the 'Palma' in which 15 record rounds are fired at 800,900 and 1000 yds respectively; total of 45 record shots. This match must be fired with a 308 Win rifle utilizing a bullet not weighing more then 155 gr. The usual configuration is a 30" barrel having a 1:13 twist. Match is usually won by someone with a perfect 450 score with any number of x's. Moral to this story: 308 Win is a wonderful caliber and I wish you well in your shooting! Bob H in Florida. As a postscript to my previous message, please look at www.davidtubb.com Mr.Tubb lives in Texas, is well known in the rifle shooting game, has been Camp Perry national rifle champ numerous times and no doubt can direct you to a 1000yd range better then anyone else. Good luck. Bob H n FLorida Last edited by easyx308; 04-27-2008 at 08:33 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
