Colt Python .357mag

I was given a Colt Python revolver by my nieghbor. He did not want it. It has a six inch barrel and is blued. It has walnut handgrips that have a little wear on them. The serial # is 763xxE. Under the serial # is an "H". I am not into pistols. I shoot the Garand and other military rifles. Can anybody tell me what I have, the year it was made, how much it is worth?

There is more to the story on the Python and how it was given to me. My nieghbor , who remodels buildings in Chicago, saw some gangbangers in his building. They ran out when they saw him and he saw one of them ditch the pistol in the garbage dumpster. He built a house next to my house in the suburbs. I have been letting him use my electricity and he told me about the above story some time back. I thought he was talking about some piece of sh it throw away gun. He comes over yesterday and gives me a six inch Python--all blued with walnut checkered grips. I dont know now if this is stolen or what. I have some concern about that. What would you do?

If a gangbanger had it,especially a python. Its probably a 98.6% chance it is stolen. The smart thing would be to give it back and have him turn it into the police department. You do not want to get caught with a stolen gun. By some slim chance its not stolen, the police will know and then you have acquired a gift from heaven.

GIVING ILLANOID'S ANTI-GUN

politicians, and cops you and the neighbor could get raked over the coals on this. such a shame too the Colt Phython is a primo revolver, carrying primo prices. i wish i knew what to advise you about how to handle this, but i see no easy/safe way to handle the situation.

Should we assume you live in Illinois? I notice you have listed the Chicagoland Area in your information. Illinois is a definite problem when dealing with a situation such as this one. I wouldn't just give it back with out wiping anything that could implicate you. If you live outside Chicago then it may be ok to go to the local police station and explain what has happened. Don't take the pistol inside when you go in the station. A python is worth a respectable amount of money. I have a friend who sold his python for $900. It was about 99.9%. It would be interesting to see where this trail goes.
