700 PSS in 308 calibre vs 700 in 300 ultra mag calibre I have a quick question. Which gun would do better? A friend of mine has recently bought a 700 series remington in 308 and it's a PSS (police sharp shooter). I hear all about this gun now because a couple years ago now, I bought a 700 series remington 300 ultra mag. Keep in mind both rifles have good glass on them. I have Leupold Boone and Crockett series mark 4. I'm sure his new gun has the same. Does this come down to a matter of the person behind the stock? Nobes (nobes19@hotmail .com) for feed back. ![]()

I cant make a connection between a .308 and a .300 rum except they both go bang. It usually makes a difference who is behind the gun.I can still outshoot most of the kids who come around. samuel.

I say it all depends on the shooter. Both are great guns, though I'm no ballistics expert so couldn't tell you anything about all that. Why not just take 'em both to the range?

| Super Moderator ![]() | "which is a better gun" is completely subjective. What do you want out of it? What sort of shooting are you looking to do? The 300 RUM shoots the same bullet much much faster, with much more recoil and over three times the ammo price. The 308 Winchester is an extremely common round with available match ammunition and many excellent, accurate rifles chambered for it. If you are planning to shhot paper at 500yd or less then the 308 is the better choice for sure. The 300 RUM has a flatter trajectory, so you might want it if your shots at game are going to be beyond 300 simply due to its trajectory and the need to estimate range precisely. Also if more power would be useful for the game you're hunting. In short, 300 RUM has narrow uses and 308 win has a wide range of uses. There are things a 300 RUM can do that a 300 cannot, but they're limited.

it depends, are you talking shooting 1-5 shot group, or 10-5 shot groups. if its 1 group, it could most definately come down to the nut behind the trigger. shoot multiple groups, and that heavy barrel has a huge advantage. now either of those rifles could have a turd for a barrel, or bedding issues. so you'll never know until you put them both on paper.
