long range caliber?

What do you guys recommend or use for long range? I'd like to do minimum 500yd competition, and eventually move up to a max of 1000. I'm considering...

22-250
25-06
260
6.5x55
270 wsm
7mm wsm
7mm rem mag
30-06
308

This will be on a mauser action, so the longer ones will be a lot less work to fit, but not necessarily a deciding factor. What do you recommend? The WSM rounds are super flat shooting, but haven't seen them or heard them talked about too much for this use, so not sure about that... Please give me your input or recommend others.

308 ackley improved, 300win mag, or 338 win mag. anything on your list will get a bullet to a target at 1000yds, but the key to better accuracy is keeping the bullet supersonic all the way there.

I would go with the .300 Win Mag, as it has been noted as having very good accuracy at 1000 yards.

the 300win mag at one time was a heavy hitter in 1000yd competetive shooting. i should also mention the 6.5-284 as another good choice.

I'm going to be using a yugo m24/47 action to build on, and I don't think that a 30-06 will fit the more I research it, much less anything bigger. I've been looking at the 7mm wsm off and on, and it seems like a good bet, but I'm wondering why I haven't really heard of these wsm rounds being used too much for this. Maybe because they're fairly new compared to these others?

.416 Barret I think it is? Also, knock off anything below .26 caliber. Too little weight, and too little energy. The wind will make the bullet hit the target next to yours lol.

I'm assuming since you are using a Mauser action, that you aren't planning on shooting in competition? If you are just planning on long-range paper-punching for fun, I would go with a proven cal. that won't beat you up like the 6.5x55, .26-06, etc. Lefty's suggestion of the 6.5x.284 is another good choice if you hand-load, although, I believe a couple of co.s are making loaded ammo now. For economy, it would be hard to beat the .308 due to its' popularity. In the end it comes down to personal preference, so I would build my own wildcat .204 STW pushing a 12 gr. bullet @ approx. 69,334.31 fps. Barrel life sux and the bullet explodes upon exiting the barrel, but it would be all mine!

the WSM's are being used in 1000yd BR. the problem is going to be getting one to feed through a mauser. cheaper and easier to build one on a savage action.

I still advise the .416 Barret. It stays supersonic up to 1.3 miles, and holds half MOA out to 1500 yards with a good rifle and good ammo. It also shoots flatter than a .50, and kicks less.

Another option would be one of the Lazzeroni's. Lazzeroni Rifles Home Page

Here is an interesting read in case you missed it:
Vince B's 7mm WSM Record-Breaker (7 Win Short Mag)

A good Mauser action is a strong platform to build on for a hunting rifle, but to really compete now you would be better off building off a Remington 700 action or even a Savage action as lefty-o said. If you haven't already have a good browse through and look at the rifles and calibers used on this page. They are the best of the best.
Not to say one can not build an accurate rifle off of a Mauser action, but there are better actions for building a custom target grade rifle.

Lefty, most of these guns are EXTREMELY heavy. Like 30-40 pounds heavy. This isnt a hunting rifle he's gonna shoot. How come he hasn't replied to this thread?

if were talking about BR, there's a few different weight classes- all the rifles are not heavy. if you'll do some research, you'll find most are not shooting big bruisers. now if we're talking other than BR, nobody is shooting 40# rifles.
