The 336 in 20" barrel is a sweet shooter. I cannot imagine that the 1895 would be any less.

BIG bullet.
Recoil quite tame.
Plenty accurate.
Smooth action.
Carries well.
Traditional design.
Ya just know that anything in N. America is toast within 150 yards.

Ok, Ok, wo-wo eyes at the range when you haul it out and fire it off.

Commercial 45-70 is smokeless.

I know that you can load the 45-70 with (OK) 70 grains of black with the appropriate weight bullet, but what are you shooting?

BP is as safe as smokeless it just has to be cleaned with more vigor ya can't leave any residue or there will be pitting.... but if you don't mind a good gun scrub it is as safe as smokeless.

Heck I find it a bit eaiser to clean BP than smokeless, Hot water, soap a drying rag and a little light oiling and yer good ta go in less than 1/2 an hour. Course that's after a hunting trip--- target pratice clean/wipe between shots then a good scrubbing at home, lightly oil and put up until next time.

Ahhh you Aussies, What can I say? except it ain't stinky s--t it's stinky sulpher an that's a whole lot o diffrence!
