I don't know. I'm thinking for some reason your cylinders are a little oversize and letting the brass expand too much to rebound correctly. Also talking out of the side of my mouth here as I ain't no expert. Like I said, as soon as I can get to the range with my Swiss, I'll fire the Russian stuff in my Nagant and we'll see if it jams mine up, too.

Here's the Russian stuff I have. Is your's the same? Like I said, when my Swiss is done getting checked out, I'll go to the range and take my Nagant and shoot this stuff. If It extracts easily from mine, I don't know what would be wrong with yours.

Yes, that's the stuff. Went through 2 boxes and had to beat every one of them out of the cylinder. What is so different from the other stuff I see, is the case is tapered at the end, where the other, that I haven't bought, has a distinct crimp at the end whereas this stuff is smooth. Don't know if that would make a difference, but right now that's the only idea I have. I'll be looking forward to what you find out.

It's definitely an expansion problem, because the unfired rounds literally fall right out of the cylinder.

Question

I and my buddy (he has two Nagants to my one) have never had extraction problems with our handloads made from .32-20 brass. These cases are too short to use the unnecessary 'gas sealing' function. We load them like any other pistol cartridge, bullet seated normally, not deep down inside.

Does it seem perhaps the case mouth that extands into the barrel may be expanding too much and hanging up on the front of the cylinder? Those Russian cases may be too thin at the mouth.

What I'm worrying about is the cylinder walls of his barrel are eroded enough to let the tips expand too far and not rebound enough to make easy extraction,

I called J&G Sales today and they want me to put a couple of more boxes through it and if it's still jamming up they will replace the gun. I want to order a box of Prvi Partizan ammo and see it that makes a difference.

I've been searching the net, trying to find a place that sells the .32acp conversion cylinder for the Nagant, but have had no luck. Does anyone have a current link to those? I'd really like to pick one up as that ammo is cheaper and easier to find. Thanks.

I've heard that the cylinder costs almost as much as the gun.

That's what I've heard also, but I just can not find anyplace that sells them. Anyway, back to the problem. After a very detailed cleaning again, I hit the range and put 7 rounds through it. At this point I'm really looking hard at the ammo. I have 3 cases that literally fell out of the cylinder and 4 I had to get a bit vigorous with to get them to release. The 3 also loaded and unloaded in all cylinders except a couple where they were a bit tight. The other 4, when I put them in a hole that one of the 3 "good" ones would fall out of, they wouldn't go all the way in. So, I'm pretty sure it's ammo, but tomorrow I'm taking it to a shop that has an ultrasonic cleaning tub and have him run the cylinder through it.

Wideners Midweek Sale E-mail show the Russian 7.62X38R as 1092 rounds in two SPAM cans for $319.00 plus shipping. You have to include a mention if you need a can opener, and it does NOT come crated - they said the full crate exceeding shipping weight limit.

Corrected price - opps!

Just when I begin thinking about getting a Nagant, a thread like this comes up. I thought it would be Mosin-like reliable but now am having doubts.

Um, could that price possibly be "$319" plus shipping? If it's $3.19 I'm on the phone right now...LOL.

So far it's really looking like it's the ammo and NOT the gun. Other than this issue, the gun seems rock hard reliable and it's a blast to shoot. Going to dump the cylinder in an ultrasonic cleaner today to see if I can clean it up more. Next will be to buy some Prvi Partizen ammo and see if I experience the same issue. But, I really think it's going to be the old milsurp I bought with it. If it does turn out to be the gun, J&G said they would replace it, no questions asked.

that sounds better. I'll be listening for the next report. It seems like it might be a good nightstand gun otherwise.

Got the cylinder back in and the ultrasonic did get some more crap out of it, but not much. Might polish the holes a bit tonight and see what happens. Need to run out to the ammo storage and retrieve some things before the storm hits...heheheh

That sounds like an excellent idea.

Got it back this afternoon and while it didn't remove what I thought was crusted on crap, it did get rid of some more powder that was caught in some spots. Still didn't cure the problem, but now I'm more positive than ever it's the ammo. Friday I will order some Prvi Partizen stuff and see what it does with that. Either way, it's just a fun gun to own and shoot. Everyone who's seen it loves the looks of it. It's so ugly it looks cool I guess.

There is a shop here in Vegas, that stocks Fiocchi Nagant ammo. I haven't had any problems with the box and a half I have shot though mine. If my home equity loan goes through, I will buy another box.
