Cool Working up the Austrian M95/34 carbine.

I last shot this rifle at the hunting lease a year ago, and could not get it on paper - I was thinking it was shooting high.

Oh, buddy, was it HIGH! Finally took it to the range tday, with a tall sheet of white paper - one target high the other low. I aimed at the lower target, at 50 yards with my fuzzy 55 year old eyes. Using my earlier light loads, it shot an average of 16 inches high!
Using my newer and stouter loads, it shot 12 inches high.
Looking at the rear sight, the fixed battle sight is marked "5" -so I am thinking it is regulated for 500 meters? Flipping it up vertical, the range marks begin at '6' - 600 meters, and go up into the 2000's - very ambitious for an open sight carbine! Basically my thinking is the 500 meter battle sight is making it shoot quite high! Next I will use some epoxy and small trimmed nails to raise the front sight blade - I want to get it shooting dead on at 100 yards. I'll take a file to the range and calibrate the front sight to what I want.
One good thing is, the earlier trouble I had with the light loads - excess sooting and the case shoulders getting uneven from insufficient pressure and expansion (read about this on other forums), now the cases look much better using the stouter load. Still a couple grains under max for this powder. Earlier loads were a hakf grain UNDER Min with a different powder. Lesson learned - these cases (Privy) are fairly thick and need proper pressure to fill the chamber.

Many times soliders were simply told to aim at the belt buckle of the bad guy, so if you are 16 inchs high at 100 yards and the sights are set for 500 any target within 500 meters will get hit.

Noone ever gave any thought to American shooters useing these rifles for hunting or target practice, they were built to protect their counrty.

That being said how were your groups?

I am really on the fence about these rifles. I passed on them back when they were $79 in the wrap, the lack of ammo kept me away (but PPU has changed that). Good looking rifles, and still at a decent price.

Anyone have experience with the ones from J&G sales? I'm a sucker for anything with a matching bayonet.

The groups were more 'patterns' - but these sights are not good for my old eyes. May try filing the V-notch out to a square notch - worked well on a couple Mausers. That and some new glasses should help considerably!

I have one I bought from J&G a couple of months ago. I've only had it out once after cleaning and refinishing it, but couldn't hit squat with it. I think I now know why.. LOL I've heard where I used to take my guns out to shoot has now been posted off limits to shooting. People said the rancher got mad about all the shotgun shells being left on the ground and his cows munching on them. Plus, I guess some people were less vigilant about making sure the cows were not in the line of fire. None were injured that I"m aware of, but on one occasion we had to shoo a few away from the area before shooting. Only in the west...hehehehehe

But, other than what appears to be a simple sight issue the gun performed flawlessy when looking at how it fed and ejected rounds and the clip was spit out the bottom just as it was designed to do. And, yes, with milsurp the thing kicks like a mule, as you would expect it to do.

I haven't fired mine in a while. One of them was spot on at 50 yards, the other was at about 200.

Trick is to remember which one shoots where.

Perhaps mounting a scope on the rifle would alleviate the sight issues as well as the aging eyes issues (it happens to all of us) S&K makes some decent scout mounts....
