A couple of unusual statistics...

Approximately half of the Winchester Model 1895's ever made went to Russia during WWI, and were chambered for 7.62x54. I've only found one of them for sale lately, and it was definitely out of my price range.

Also, according to contemporary accounts many Russian soldiers in that war went into battle unarmed; they were told by their sergeants that 'a weapon will become available.' In some battles up to 28 percent had no guns.

Wonder if they were at least given pouches of ammo, or if they were expected to strip those off corpses also?

Have you seen "Enemy At The Gates"? Each pair of newly arrived Russian troops were given one rifle, the other man got some ammo. They were told, "When your partner gets killed, take his rifle!" or something similar.

they won WWII because of the T-34, the IL-2, and the oodles of P39s. not to mention the PPSHs. they werrn't really a factor in WWI on account of the russian revolution.

in anycase, yeah, i've known about this for some time. they also sold S&W revolvers to the russians, too. on account of the russians couldn't make the guns in sufficient quantities to supply their army. also, the KGB was origionally a military unit from some other country, i think Estonia, but i'm not sure. and we had a unit of our military stranded there in russia for decades.

Suppose some of those may end up coming back to the states as C&Rs?

By the way: if anyone's wondering why I posted off-topic, the answer is that I was WAY off-topic. I had never read this forum, and thought I was posting on the Mosin-Nagant forum. Don't even know how I managed to get it to here instead...when it didn't come up where it should be, I re-posted and mentioned that the original was lost somewhere. Someone who knows his way around better than I do found it and posted a link, so I came on over.

But I've enjoyed the thread anyway. And yes, they do come back occasionally as C&R's. But the last one I saw had a $3,000.00+ price tag on it.

Of course, back in the '60's I was making $1.25 an hour, so that would've been darned near a week's wages. Yeah, I know. I'm dating myself.

Remember the old saying? "If you don't remember the '60's, you were there..."

They have a history of rupturing due to age but they look good on the wall.

Anything that was designed by Browning, and chambered originally for .405, would seem to me to be pretty safe from rupturing regardless of age.

The only '95's I've heard of with catastrophic failure were those in .30-06, when people after WWl tried to shoot 8mm in them. That did in a lot of springfield '03's, too.

Guns & Ammo TV had a segment on the 1895 and its supply to Russia. Since the show repeats old episodes quite a bit, you may be able to catch it sometime. I have seen that particular episode twice already.

Do they sell copies of their shows?
