new to the 7.62 x 25 Please help........

I was considering purchasing a 7.62 X 25 for back up home protection....(2nd to the mossberg) because the price was affordable ............. I have been told that the gun will shoot its bullets plus 9mm bullets also , then I have been told that for it to shoot the (9mm bullet I need to change the barrel ) If true I have checked around and the 7.62 x 25 bullets are hard to find (except online)..... I guess Im just trying to find info out about the gun ....will it shoot 9mm ammo with the 7.62 x25 barrel? How would I be able to tell if it has the factory barrel or the 9mm barrel? In your opinion what gun would you compare it to? and on a power chart where would it rank in order? (example...22,25,32,38,9.357,40,45 may be wrong but just an example)

Pretty safe to say that the 7.62x25 barrel WON'T shoot the 9mm. Be like shooting .380s in a .32.
Won't fit.

It is true that you can swap barrels on some guns and fire 9mm from a gun originally chambered for the 7.62x25. I'm not sure if the barrels are "drop-in" or if a gunsmith is needed. You cannot shoot both rounds from the same barrel.

The 7.62x25 uses a .30 caliber bullet. The 9mm is a .355 caliber. The 7.62 has a bottleneck case. The 9mm is straight-walled. They don't interchange.

The 7.62x25 is a fairly hot round, the ".30 caliber magnum" of its day. The Soviets chambered their submachines guns for it in WWII and also used it in their Tokarev service pistols.

Some folks will say that a .30 caliber pistol bullet is too small/too light, but that little 7.62 bullet moves along quite fast. It is adequate as a self-defense backup gun, IMO.

If you get the CZ52, you can get the 9mm barrel at makarov.com(if they have any left).

Hi Lancefiles,

I have a CZ52 and just love it. It's my "truck" gun. I have a local pawn shop that carries all the different 7.62X25 ammo - Russian surplus, B&S, Wolf, and others. Check with some of the local pawnshops and see if they'll carry the ammo for you, especially if you know someone else that has a CZ52 and will need ammo. But if you get the surplus ammo, just use it for practice as I get about 10% FTF.

As for the round, I'd rate it just under a 357 mag. And the CZ 52 shot POA at 25 yards and gave me a nice group - about 2 inches at 25 yards. And the CZ 52 I bought came with holster and two mags. So I always have a spare loaded mag if I need it.

Hope you get the CZ 52. They're cheap and a lot of fun to shoot.

The 7.62x25 is easy to find online, but I have seen a fair amount of it available at some shops and gun shows. It is indeed a hot round and I absolutely love it.

I LOVE my cz52....but if you get it, make SURE you get an aftermarket firing pin. The original is brittle and WILL break if dry fired. You can also get a firing pin (like mine) that greatly improves the trigger pull, and well worth the bucks.
as for 9mm....nope, unless the barrel is an aftermarket and SPECIFICALLY SAYS ON THE BARREL 9mm.

(cz52's also make a nice fireball when shot at night!)

Just a side note, the 9mm barrel is after market, but works beautifully in the cz52, you use the same magazine you use for the 7.62x25 round. makarov.com had them at one time, I'm unsure if they still do, but a gunshow would most likely produce your best results.

As far as I know and only from reading, not first hand, the Czechs never issued 9mm barrels. That was an importer trying to capitalize on popularity of 9mm. I have also read that you can use the same magazine for both rounds, 9mm and 7.62x25, but that the 9mm was not as reliable. Last time I was looking, I could not find a 9mm barrel. Maybe on ebay. The 7.62x25 round is quite fast and has a reputation for penetrating very well, maybe too well for indoor self defense. See the website "boxotruth". I don't remember the exact address, but google it. There's a lot of fairly good home grown research.

I have no trouble finding ammo for the CZ52, both locally and on the internet. Buy it in volume you will be shooting a lot.

there is a extractor claw that ya need to change along with the barrel to switch calibers between 9mm and 7.62x25

I think the 7.62X25 is a great little round. In its military form it was responsible for many kills due to its penetration through heavy winter clothing. This was fine in Russia and Korea as well as any other frozen climate. The 7.62X25 over penetrates on lightly dressed man sized target. If S&B would make a hollowpoint that would definitely make the 7.62X25 a viable defence round.

I have a friend who has built a single shot rifle chambered in 7.62x25, it does a good job on prairie dogs, coyotes, chucks and other varmints. He handloads with a lead hollowpoint with a gas check.
