I'm wanting to get a .450 Bushmaster upper for my AR, that would put the smack down on a deer or hog inside of 150 yds. If I got it it would replace my .30-30 as my woods rifle.

Try the 6.8 SPC. I shot a deer with it last fall... He only went about 10 yards, then dropped dead; no suffering or anything.

I have really been wanting to try the 6.8. What is your ammo? Also, since the 300 ACC Blackout/Whisper or whatever is now a SAMMI round, has anybody killed deer or hogs with it? If so what range and penetration? Thanks.

This is the ammo I used for my last deer kill (at 84 yards... he went about 5 feet, then dropped like a rock). Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: 6.8mm SPC :: 6.8mm SPC 120 GR SSTŪ

I always use this stuff... CANNOT go wrong with it, Brother. =)

Also, I have taken two deer with their V-MAX rounds, but prefer the SST.

Thanks. I like everything Hornady makes and have been reloading with them since 1970. Have made 563 yard kills with their 30 cal no 3033 bullet and probably a dozen over 300 with that bullet (antelope hunting). Like everything they make in SST including handgun rounds and will try it when I get the 6.8 upper.

Sounds GREAT! The 6.8 will handle deer with ease, along with everything smaller... if it were Elk, then it will still work, but anything bigger, and even with elk to be safe, I'd use something bigger... say a 30-06, or .300... But I've already seen it drop Elk at 200+ plus yards in one shot NO problem... I guess Im just a little Conservative, .

Well guy's each his own but a .22 has dropped many a deer, I use a .223 but you must pick your spot and ensure it is a clean shot. We as hunters must keep the sport clean and safe to many want our rights

I'm not a fan of the AR platform but, probably the best for it would be a .308 Win.

I`ve often wondered when some one is going to ask, what cal they can get a Gatlin Gun in. Like maybe 22 short. Quiet and ammo is cheap. Would eliminate carrying those normal sized extra clips. While the "short" may not be the best it surly it better than those powerful Air Rifles being touted as the next deer rifle

The only way I would use a AR for deer is if it was a 6.8SPC which I do use as my mane hunting long arm. I use either the 110gr AccuBond or the 110gr Pro hunter for deer and I use the 85gr TSX for pigs.

The 223 definitely has the power to kill deer out to around 300 yards. The problem is with the bullet. Make sure that you are using a bullet that is specifically designed for hunting. Do that and it's great for deer.
Save the FMJ or Match bullets for other uses.

223/5.56 is a good deer cartridge... nothing wrong with it! Just do like you would with any other game, use good bullet placement on your intended target. I know many, many people that use it and wouldn't use anything else.

I feel that the 223 drops em much faster than a 30-06.
I own 20 acres in Michigan and wont use anything other than a 223.
They drop fast.
I've had deer run 200 with a 30-o6, never had a deer run further than 50 yards with an AR-15 223 round.
Here in VA the smallest caliber that can be used is a .243. I believe that's just poorly written to keep .22 from being used. If we were allowed to, I wouldn't hesitate to use my AR. From my experience, if you can shoot both lungs you will have a deer to take home. The deer doesn't care if it's lungs were punctured with .223 or .50. It will still bleed out. Not to sound like it's easy game, but if you are accurate, the .223 is quite capable.
