Since I cant escape thinking about it. What do you do out there? when your old injuries and moments of discomfort threaten to keep you from being out there enjoying weapons and nature. Do you push yourself despite factors or know when to sit tight and wait. I hate this.

Before my back operation July 11th I was taking a potentially highly addictive pain medicine called oxycondin for the previous three months. I had to skip turkey season last season because I couldn't walk into the hunting area, etc. or even stand up for only a few minutes. Since my operation I'm totally off all pain meds and look forward to continuing my hunting activities, starting with deer season in a few days...Nov. 10th. I'm now able to walk daily around 2 miles. I feel very thankful to God for the skill of my surgeon and his operating team. I was about to believe my physical activities were over forever...but now I've got my life back again.

You just have to adapt and realize that your disabilities are the result of age and disease, and not your own fault. learn to live with it and accept it. I had a massived heart attack 12 years back, and now am limited in how far I can walk do to spinal stinosis...I have the ride the old man go-cart at walmart, and no longer can hunt. BUT, I get around and am deadly at my clubs bench rest competition. I still workfull time, run a business, have a great family, and have a damm full life. I believe any day you wake up in the morning is a great day....and realize I might live another 30 years, or I could be worm food tommarow...either way I am not going to go quiet into that goodnight! Life is a wonderful gift, and you must learn to live it and enjoy it everyday no matter what your personal limitations might be.

OK I have scoliosis and lean to the left, L leg is 1\2" shorter than other, from injury in 04 that also really aggrevated my upper back further. Not that old either (34) unlucky things happen like last year a pinched nerve in L shoulder rotator cup. Hard to come to grips with all this, attend physical therapy and live a very active life. Doctors told me low impact aerobic regiments. if I gain weight and idle I will end up on a cane. not into pills or narcotic effects. Tonite I will sleep on hardwood floor see how tomorrow turns out. Hate to complain Oh well just posted here a bit, it was aggravating to stay inside on my day off had my target /adjusting kit and Mosin rifle ready to go to a lovely spot in the woods, where the afternoon rays of the sun illuminate target just nice. Interesting another more popular shooting spot is 500ft from houses, I do not go there even if its legal, feel bad for people living near by. Halloween night we went trick or treat, at one house the guy said 2 yrs ago a round came into his living room! Now thats bad. |

Best of Luck, rtch! My wife has severe chronic pain and deals with it every day. She takes a lot of medication, including Morphine, but is still in constant pain. She functions the best she can, and is actually very active, considering. She even manages to take care of two young grandchildren on a near full-time basis. The best advice I can give is, pain sucks, but attitude is everything. You have to be willing to fight back instead of letting it win, otherwise it will. Take Care and God Bless.

rtch77 1st. you need to get your Pelvic level !!! and you do that with a shoe with a thicker sole, if you haven't already. With your pelvic out of alighnment, can cause alot of the conditions you mentioned. If your Doctor has'nt mentioned this to you, you need to go to another Doctor or a specialist that probably a nurologist. Trust me, been there done that a shorter leg will cause you a host of problems and I don't mean the middle leg now LOL...A.H |

I have degenerative disc disease of the lumbar spine, bipoalar also, I cannot set for long periods of times, or stand for long periods of times, and i have constant pain in my left lower back, what i have found to help most is walking, therefore i walk 4 or more miles a day delivering news papers for my local paper office, helps my back, i stay active and i get paid to do it, I still go hunting, and i get out there and enjoy myself regardless, as for the bipolar i take medications daily for that and i do well. you never get any younger and its there to stay, but you do what you enjoy doing while ya can.

Its very frustrating to have to use a cane to walk around, but I can't walk 10 ft without it. I have lived with chronic and severe back and neck pain since an on duty car accident in 1998. I can't change it, so I must accept it. If I can get to the pistol range once in a while it takes my mind off my disabilities. I can shoot 1" groups at 15 yards off hand-what pain?. Just bought a new Kimber Pro-Carry in 38 Super and I'm hoping to shoot better with it than my 1911s. Thats what keeps me going.

We know a lady, probably in her early eighties, who had a problem with discs in her back. They inserted a baloon in the center of her vertibrae and added air to straighten the discs. Then the pumped in some kind of stuff to form a silicone "Rivet" to keep it all lined up. Last I heard she moved back up to Tennessee and was getting around fine. Before that she could hardly move without severe pain. There is always hope, they keep coming up with novel cures every day. |

Sometimes life deals you a few bad hands but no matter what you just have to keep your chin up and keep on going. Back in 2005 i was riding my bike to work and had a semi trailer pull across 7 lanes of traffic right in front of me. I went under the last wheel of the trailer (48 feet long) i broke my left knee, my left leg in 4 places ( 1 was a compound fracture) shattered my right foot and ankle, and had a burst fracture of L3 Vertebra (was in 90 or so peices) Now i have a steel rod from my knee to my ankle, my foot is made from my hip and my L3 was replaced with a steel cage and a steel brace was screwed from L2 to L4. The doctors told me i would never walk again, but i stayed positive and just kept going, now i am back at work full time driving excavators and loaders and walk with no limp at all. The best advice i can offer is to know your limits, you will know what you can and cant do and most importantly dont let someone else tell you what your limits are only you can know this. As for your question when it comes to my hunting and shooting i know my limits but i will push past them because i love and enjoy it so much, i couldnt picture myself living life not doing what i love. And to add to the other discussion the day i left the hospital i left all the pain medication there aswell. The way i looked at it, it's going to hurt the rest of my life so i may aswell get used to it now, and it still hurts but i am used to it now, it is normal so i hardly notice it. |
