DPMS Sportical

Howdy guys,
Getting my first AR soon (kinda hard to find $600+ when your 15, ain't got a job and working a hour a night for your dad's friend building houses) And was looking mainly at DPMS guns. The Sportical looks nice; fairly cheap, A3 flat top, etc. But want to hear from some one who actually owns the rifle. Any one here shot it? some one that can explain to me if it is a good choice, or know if I should spend my cash in the Panther lite, or Lo-Pro area?

I do not have the Sportical but have owned a Classic for a few years. DPMS is a good place to start and I don't think you would be disappointed with it at all. The trigger will be a good place to start when you begin to upgrade and is my only complaint.

I have a Sporticle. It's a smooth sided AR, no dust cover or forward assist, which is stuff you really don't need unless your in a combat situation.

Very nice gun. I like mine a lot. Only thing I changed internally was the trigger springs to give it a lighter pull. Brownells sells the spring set for about $16.

Externally, well, that's another matter!

Whew*, purdy looking gun you got there Alden! Thanks for the info, I thought that the gun might have some internal differences between other DPMS's. But I think it is a safe bet to say that it is all generally the same.

I like the clean lines of the Sportical, of course since DPMS is on the 'Assault Rifle Ban' list and is an evil gun, I can't buy a DPMS lower for a build, but I see the Sportical upper (which is completely legal) on sale at MidwayUSA all the time, and it offers what I would like in an AR.

My wife bought one for me 2 weeks ago for my birthday, as the weather in NE KS hasnt been to outdoor friendly here the last few weeks I've only had the chance to take it out once, but I gotta say I'm lovin it. Helluva great starting platform for customization, I got plans for this baby. I'd suggest it to anyone. Then best part is that since I was a ground-pounder in the Marine Corps I'm already intimatley familiar with the workings of these type of weapons, LOVE this gun.......

22, I had a Sportical from DPMS, and as far as assault weapons go it was the cats meow. I had the .308 cal. I took it (11lbs) to the range and after several mags of shoulder thumping, my brain woke up. What do I need this for? I have .30/06 rifles for hunting, that wt. less, and have better stock ergonomics for precision target acquisition! I decided it was more about saying I had one(assault weapon), than using one! Sold it three weeks later. It really is personal preference, but...........................

They can be/get heavy. If not careful one could end up with a three story rifle requiring a wheelbarrel to lug around.LOL

If you want to save even more money, look at getting a parts kit. Rifle Parts Kits | AR-15 | Gun Parts by Gun Make & Model | Gunsmithing & Gun Parts |. Just add a stripped receiver and you're ready to go! You might get more for the same money if you go with a del ton kit.

My Sportical is on the left. Hard to tell from that pic but I duracoated the stock OD Green to match my PMAG's, my Ergo Never Quit mag well grip, and the handguards/rail covers.

I must say, my buddy has a Colt M4 that he purchased after his tour in Iraq, another friend has an Armalite, and some dude at the range last weekend had a Red Jacket AR and my Sportical out shot every one of them by quit a bit. I was smoking 20oz pop bottles at 300 left and right while they couldn't even hit the 6in "gongs" at that distance.

Would you choose it over a barebones Colt?

As of yesterday, I think I can safely say my rifle is complete. All the accessories, parts, and random crap is there in my eyes.

Shoots pretty **** good too. 5 shots, M193 55-gr FMJ.

Far right was my first shot.

Try the UTG quad rail. I have one on mine right now and it's tight. No rattle whatsoever.
