1917 Enfield

My dad has in his collection, a 1917 Enfield. It was issued to my grandfather when he was in the navy in WW2. On the part where the clip slides in, it says 1917 Eddiestone. Could someone tell me something about it? Sorry dont have any pictures at the moment.

Well basic info is that it's chambered for 30-06 and should be good with any ammo out there. The 1917 was used in WWI more than most people realize. It's a strong and venerable rifle to keep with pride. Depending on where it was used it may have some value to it, but hardly as much as it would have to your family as a piece of history that is your heritage.

Keep it preserved, shoot it conservatively, and remember what the people who carried them did for you and me.

Designed in England and made in the USA for Brittain in .303 British cal. When England no longer had need for them, US military had them chambered in 30-06 for their own use. Made in three factories: Winchester, Remington, Eddystone (Remington owned). Very strong action and in my experience, more accurate than the Lee Enfield.

I've had some .303 Enfields that were nail drivers and I've had some that wouldn't hit the barn door. But, I've never had nor heard of a US 1917 Enfield in 30.06 that wasn't an "eyeball gun" BUT...I still love them 'ol .303 Enfields, and will always have at least one in the safe. Got a #4MK1 that's real purdy but not too impressive at the range. But, I'm working on it and it's getting better.

what kind of ammo do you use? Also, if you are bucking the round and anticipating recoil, that will make you miss an entire target!
