fitting new stock

Hi all
Trying to fit my replacement Pakistani stock to my 1943 LongBranch #4 Mk 1*, and I can't seem to get the front or middle handguard band to close. A LARGE gap is present, no way those short little screws will fit.
Any ideas on what is wrong with the fit? Everything seems flush, although the front handguard is a wee bit higher than the rear...I am considering getting longer (non original) screws to do the job, but I'd like to stay original if I can.
Many thanks!

The some bands are going to be abit hard to start the screw .
Maybe scrape the channel some...but not too much.
Make sure the forestock is seated properly .
X2 for photos

When it comes to shimming ( loose stocks ) , I use Birch Bark and smear it with BLO.
