| Enfield No4 Mk1 VS. SMLE No1 MK3
I just bought an Enfield No4 Mk1 that reads No4 MK1 ROF(F) with manufacturing date which I Believe reads 3/45. Stamped over that is No4 Mk1 (F) FTR/47. A buddy of mine has an SMLE No1 Mk3 and I have been comparing them. They both have a 5 groove barrel, and my No4 is quite a bit more shiny but I am curious if they changed anything in the design of the rifling with the No4 because mine looks a bit smoother, though the rifle itself is in better condition with near perfect blue. I really hope that it isn't shot out or anything. Anyone who might be able to help out is greatly appreciated. PS if anyone knows much about this rifle after checking out my model and everything that would be awesome. I already know that it is from Fazakerley and I would assume the FTR is from being refinshed or something. |

Yup you're right, FTR means factory thorough repair but 1947 was a long time ago!!! (Before I was born) Get a good gunsmith to check out your barrel, you can put an awfull lot of ammo though a barrel in 61 years and the rifling should really be clearly defined. Some barrels were in RH twist & some in LH, depending on where it was built, Fazakerley would have produced LH twist and Longbranch did a 5RH twist (plus it's more common 2 groove), not sure about the other factories. Enfields were built with 2, 3,4,5 & 6 groove rifling in LH & RH twist. |

I took it out to the range the other day, and I must say I am very pleased! All ten shots about where I wanted them at 100 yards!

Recoil wasn't too bad, though I tested it after I shot my new Steyr so I don't know how it is without being beaten to death first.
