| Senior Member | No. 1 Mk III Restoration Project
I picked up a Lithgow No.1 MkIII a few weeks ago. It was sitting in a gun shop that I frequent. It was sporterized, but not drilled for a scope, only the stock was butchered. The barrel was in very good shape, with no pitting and sharp grooves. So, I picked it up for $125.00. I was leary about the fact that I would be spending more money than it was probably worth to get parts to restore it, but I figured it would be a project that I could do while on vacation. Well, here are the results. The stock took some fitting, and the handguards aren't matching, but I think it adds to the character. Here are the before and after pictures.

Joe, I wouldn't say it was butchered. Looking at that batch of pics, I'd have kept it in the sporter version. Whomever did that did a nice job (or else you did a really nice job of cleaning it up for pictures!) But, it looks beautiful in the restored version, as well... Good work! Hope it kept you out of trouble on vacation (Other than the usual, "You spend all your time on those nasty old guns...").

They did do a good job sporterizing it. The before pictures are as it was when I brought it home. I guess butchering is in the eye of the beholder. If anyone wants the sporterized stock, let me know. I still have it. It is original coachwood, and has the reinforcing plates.

That looks exactly like the ones my grandpa sporterized and sold a long time ago, but the ones he did had part of the wood handguard left between the rear sight and the reciever.

The fore-stock and front upper handguard are from BDL LTD Rifles and Accessories. The rear upper handguard is from Numrich Arms as well as some of the hardware. The rest of the hardware came from Springfield Sporters. The butt-stock is original.
